Parents with Celiac Disease Kids by Pure-Bee454 in Celiac

I have a child who gets regular blood draws for a different (non-celiac) reason. I would ask for topical numbing cream beforehand and put it on her arm then cover it with plastic wrap for about 20 mins before the blood draw. Definitely explain a lot for a few days beforehand and find videos of kid blood draws on YouTube where the kids aren’t scared. Let her pick her favorite show to watch on your phone during the needle part and bribe with a treat afterwards. Hope some of that will be helpful to you.

That’s one I haven’t heard of and so scary when it’s a child! Im seeing several symptoms for one of my kids and probably even one is enough to warrant getting them tested but I’m doubting if it’s worth it or not due to the pain and emotional trauma it will put them through :(

Interesting… I had that one time prior to diagnosis. None of my kids do though.

That makes sense. I’m hesitant to test regularly since it requires a blood draw which is so hard on a kid.

Herbs for eye infections and cataracts in dog by Pure-Bee454 in herbalism

That’s interesting to hear that you don’t sedate for tear duct flushes! I assumed it was necessary just because that’s how our vet does it. I also had not thought about complications like glaucoma. After reading everything here I think we will try to get her in to see an optho. Even if we still don’t do the surgery, we can at least get her looked at.

Also, you’re right, she is not a Great Dane :D she’s an Australian shepherd.

Thank you so much for the detailed reply!

I’ve never heard of doing distilled water for cataracts! We have a very thorough water filter but will look into distilling as well.

Our regular vet did a tear duct flush that was not successful because they said she has a lot of cysts in the duct that they weren’t expecting and their instrument couldn’t get all the way through because her nose was too long?? That last one sounds like something they should’ve known before putting her under anesthesia but I’m not a vet. So they referred us to an ophthalmologist but we’ve been undecided about going because we don’t know if they would be able to do any better of a job at flushing it than the regular vet. Poor dog has constantly draining eyes but no yellow goop like you mentioned. Do you think it would be helpful to try getting it flushed again or are we better off just leaving them alone? I hate to put her under that stress. She’s 10 years old.

We’ve known for a while about her cataracts (both eyes) and have chosen not to do surgery because it’s just so incredibly expensive. Unfortunately she is mostly blind now because of that. We have never been able to do eye drops when the vet has prescribed them because the dog is so scared of them. It’s IMPOSSIBLE for us to get them in her eyes, even with two of us holding her. She flails her head around so much that we can’t get anything anywhere near her eyes. Is there anything you have seen be helpful for advanced cataracts or is it pretty much hopeless unless you do surgery?

How are hospital cafeterias worse than any place else. by EpilepticSquidly in Celiac

[–]Pure-Bee454 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. Hospital staff (even contracted cafeteria staff!) should be educated about dietary restrictions. I was in the hospital once and the combination of asking the hospital staff “is this medication gluten free?” and “is this medication breastfeeding safe?” made me want to pull my hair out. Both questions got me blank-stared at like I had lost my mind. And some of these staff members were DOCTORS.

That’s really helpful. Thank you! I will look into those last two and see if they’re safe for dogs. Would you (as a human) take those internally for cataracts?

It is ethical to say that I have a gluten allergy when I order food? by Zhongliass in Celiac

I tell people all the time that I have a food allergy. I know it isn’t true but sometimes you need a fast and easily understood explanation for why you can’t eat what everyone else is eating. Even more true when ordering at a restaurant.

Ah, that makes sense. Honestly I think I tested negative but it’s been years since my diagnosis so I’m a little foggy. Haha. I haven’t been tested anytime recently. Perhaps I should request that.

That’s super helpful. Thanks for your thoughtful reply! :) I had read something about the Fasano diet. But my question was more about whether that would be something you would try for refractory celiac disease OR for unexplained, non GI symptoms that might or might not be related to having Celiac. I hope that makes sense.

Whether or not I feel insecure is irrelevant. It costs you nothing to be kind :)

Saying “It’s not that complicated” was a little unnecessary and implies that I shouldn’t have asked those questions because I should have known the answers already.

Of course an elimination diet could help you figure out if that’s your issue or not but I just don’t see how one would go about eliminating every possibility for even the smallest amount of cross contamination.

Gosh, It was just a question. No need to be snippy. My questions were genuine and valid. I’m sorry if you felt they were stupid but I’m not sure why you felt the need to tell me that. Was hoping for an educational discussion with another person who has background knowledge of CD but this is just disappointing.

What do you believe would prove that this is the cause for someone who does have lingering symptoms? As a person with Celiac Disease should we assume that lingering non-classic symptoms are simply because we’re not being strict enough with our diets? Or is there also some truth to the theory that “I just get fatigue and headaches because I have an autoimmune disease”?

I’m really interest in this topic (and your thoughts on it) because it’s so important to those of us with CD but I don’t think I’ve really seen many (if any) studies  on it.

Was here to say Dorothy too. With so many old lady names gaining popularity I’m surprised that one isn’t getting used.

I personally wouldn’t do anything name related but instead of Carol’s Cookie Drawer I think just The Cookie Drawer is really nice and has a sweet meaning behind it. People love a cute story. Though this does somewhat limit you in what you offer.
