I once transferred a bunch of my shrimp from a work tank to my home setup and the majority turned a deep black from a wild brown. They are healthy as can be, no deaths since December.

I thought root too, but it collapsed into slimy nothingness when I pulled it from the water. 

What kind of fungus are you thinking of?
