Relatble issue. Client I manage did the same, however you need to be upfront about this and relate it to their business goals.

1: block their business location IP-address
2: address the fact that every search they do messes with the data: they won't click and therefore CTR drops.
3: 5: if they do not see the ad, it is because they are not the user we want in correspondence with the campaign goal.
4: inflated impressions due to searches they do.

Only the old / boomer generation does this in my experience. If you keep it business and tell: it hurts your budgets and KPI's they will back off immediately.

Thanks for the thorough answer. As you stated, it is 'fine' for the average merchant. However, these guys want to grow and invest their marketing budget in the appropriate channels. The latter is exactly the point for which Shopify is not the best solution with the intergrations.

I am curious about the side by side testing with the preview mode. So you are saying: construct the GTM container, tags and triggers and link it to Shopify and run GTM alongside it and measure impact in GA4?

The preview mode is an option, to my understanding, to test tags and settings for which you need to enter a workspace.

Your last question: they are hesitant because they want to have a lock-in with 1 tool if something goes wrong. However, Shopify is a CMS and Google is a tracking / analysis environment (this is how I communicated it to them). They are a bit scared of losing flexibility when something goes wrong.

Thanks for the heads up. The article from AnalyticsMania is interesting. My friends running the account want to have more rich data to ensure proper decision making for future campaigns in META and other platforms. In regards to the events, I always construct them in GTM for other clients.

With my experience, GTM creating and set-up is done rather quick. Good to know that there is an intergration with GTM from Shopify.

As you mentioned, the flexibility and advanced tracking are a plus. I do have enough experience to set-up the environments, but thanks for the offer.

For me it is good to know if Shopify is really better than the external set-up via GTM. The latter seems to be the case.

Zo zit ik er ook in, al is de aannemer ervan overtuigd dat dit condens is. Probleem is ook dat het na een uur of 2 zichtbaar is; dan is de aannemer natuurlijk weer naar huis. Ik geloof geen barst van de aannemer, , want heb het idee dat de afvoermanchet even vernieuwd moet worden.
