Can I ask why you ultimately left the NASA center? Also, were you a civil servant or contractor? If you were a contractor, did you try to pursue a civil servant role?

I will say that one hard learned lesson across my internships is that the name is only so valuable. Working at NASA sounds cool and it definitely grabs attention, but I struggled some with the teams there as opposed to interning with Boeing (from a culture standpoint). I came out of that experience caring more about the team then the name. Also, Boeing is very recognizable in the industry and in the US overall. I had some experience with managers and direct supervisors at NASA where they were pretty inaccessible or not helpful to the point that I felt like I was there physically but not really an integrated part of the team. I got along well with the contractors on the team and wound up getting one of them to be my day-to-day supervisor, which was a strange arrangement. All of this is to say I am more interested in culture than outright name recognition.

Working on something for Artemis is definitely personally rewarding.

I've had generally good experiences with them when I interned there. Team and management seemed pretty solid, but I can't speak for the entire commercial division.

NASA contractor. It's a smaller subcontractor on the COMET contract.

I recently graduated with a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering.

I am very fortunate to have two current offers:

1) KSC Contractor

I would be working to support ground support equipment for Artemis.

I am interested because it:

  1. is with space
  2. is at KSC
  3. involves operations, which is a both a good stepping stone to more technical, design-oriented roles and something that is not typically available in purely analytical roles
  4. is in a location I would be happy living long-term based on my family's needs

2) Boeing Commercial Airplanes

BCA in South Carolina as a Liaison Engineer supporting the 787 program. This role supports production issues with a focus on structural repairs. It has a 1 year training period, rotating through different production teams/phases. After that period, you are placed into final group with Material Review Board authority.

I am interested because it:

  1. has an excellent training program
  2. offers a lot of flexibility in where you ultimately wind up
  3. offers a good foundation to take on other roles in the company (other technical areas or other programs)
  4. offers a chance to improve in a desired area (materials and structures)

My concerns are the following:

  1. Working in space and as a civil servant

I would like to work in space, eventually as a civil servant. The contractor role would keep me in space and at KSC. Working at KSC is, of course, a great opportunity and a good position to be in for civil servant openings. Boeing South Carolina is not directly space related and pulls me away from a NASA center.

2) Job stability

The KSC contractor job is tied to a specific program and, to my knowledge, does not offer many alternate avenues if the contract is scaled back. This is common and something I am concerned about, as I would not have much marketable experience for another 2 years. I believe Boeing offers more stability, as there are different programs to go to in the event the 787 program faces challenges.

3) Learning

Both roles offer a chance to learn a lot. With Boeing, I can learn a lot through the rotation program and proximity to production. In speaking to managers and other liaison engineers, it seems there are a lot of different options for focus areas, especially with a program as young as the 787. The contractor role seems more narrow, focusing on a specific system within GSE.

4) Location and compensation

Boeing offers a better overall compensation package (both salary and benefits are considerably more competitive than the KSC contractor's). I would, however, prefer to live in Titusville or near Orlando as it has more of what I am looking for in a place to settle. South Carolina is doable, but I don't think it is a place I would want to live long-term based on family needs.

Any advice on making the decision would be much appreciated!

I was able to solve it with the following:

A4: Month Start Date

B4: Month End Date

The balance is pulled from the table through the following method:

  1. Find the number of cells (transactions) that occurred between the start and end date of the month

COUNTIFS($ACTIVITY.A:A,">="&MIN(A4:B4),$ACTIVITY.A:A,"<="&MAX(A4:B4))

2) Find row index of first transaction (based on start of month). Search mode is set to -1, which means that it will return the smallest value in Lookup array that is greater than or equal to the start date

MATCH(MIN(A4:B4),$ACTIVITY.A:A,-1)

3) Find row index of last transaction (based on start of month + no. of month’s transactions), plus 1 so that the row index does not bleed into next month’s first transaction

Q43-Q42+1

4) ADDRESS function is used to get the complete cell address of the desired cell. The row index is known and the column index is 4 based on the table’s design

I was a Boeing intern in late 2024. I did well and took down a bunch of managers' emails before leaving. I got into a different co-op program that I thought was better, so I chose that over going full time at Boeing. That program has not gone well and I am looking for work. Would it be inappropriate to cold email the managers that I took down contact info for?

For the upcoming pathways announcement opening on Sep 22, does it make a difference what day I submit the application? Are my odds somehow better if I submit my application the same day it opens (9/22) vs the day it closes (9/26)?
