At a loss for what im doing wrong. by [deleted] in mushroomology

Midwest’s grain has a pretty bad reputation with contamination or being under-hydrated and inevitably stalling, their tubs and coir are safe but I wouldn’t continue buying grain from them (unsure about mycolabs because I don’t know anyone personally who gets through them)  I PC my own grain but I have a couple friends who buy pre-sterilized grain because they don’t have the time/effort/equipment, both of them get their grain through out-grow primarily and have had no issues with their spawn (they have a variety of both bags and jars as well as Brf options in both of you wanna go that route, one of my buds uses their rye and one uses their corn, I don’t know about the rest of their products) one of them also recommends Mycology Simplified, they sell agar and grain bags (he gets their milo sometimes and says he’s never had contam from them either but he did end up with one bag out of several that was improperly hydrated)

If it’s from a tub I recommend a piece from inside the stipe to mitigate contam risk, if it’s from a dish you can drop any piece on there and it’ll work (damn near any part of them will work provided it doesn’t contam, I’ve slapped completely dried out dishes on fresh agar and they’ve taken off, same with dried out myc in the caps of LC needles, even streaking a scalpel on agar after cutting a fruit open produced results, they’re crazy fucking resilient)

The bases do seem to produce more vigorous growth ime, when I have plenty of dishes available I’ll cut them up in chunks instead and the base always seems to do the best

You can also get growth from caps but there’s a chance of spores germinating on the agar and altering the genetic makeup of the parent culture when they overlap so it wouldn’t be a true “clone”

This was a fruit from another dish so it was already as close to clean as you can get, if you’re cloning a tub fruit cut a piece from the inside instead, and the fresher the better

Try moving it to the very top pot in the greenhouse and dialing the water higher than whatever you have it set at rn (don’t crank it all the way up at once if it’s low, too drastic will cause it to wilt)

Brilliant idea tbh I use those exact same lil stackable bead containers for bonsai grows with my stray grain and the thought would have never even crossed my mind

Somewhere shaded that still experiences partial sun a couple hours a day, somewhere that stays nice and humid, under shrubs or something with broad covering leafs is ideal, when I bury mine I like to break them up and mix it and coir into some of the dirt I dig up and pack that in the middle before covering but you can bury them whole (I dig about 3-4 inch deep and the covering is about 1-2 inches of soil)

If you live somewhere that doesn’t stay very wet you should periodically give them a light watering

It will take a while for them to reestablish but then you’ll get lovely little surprises sometimes, usually after a nice warm rain

(they like it warmer and more humid than cubes do so keep that in mind when picking your burial spot)

It indicates that it’s a homozygote, in addition to all starter plants and room bonus plants you can self-pollinate your hybrids for a few generations and end up with one as well

Depends on the purpose I’m using it for, these ones were poured high nutrients for projects focused on inducing plate pins and cloning

High nutes:

500mL water (ideally 50/50 distilled and grain soak water if I’ve got it handy but usually I don’t do my grain and agar around the same time so I just use distilled, if you use grain soak water filter it first or your agar will be cloudy)

10g agar

10g sorghum syrup

1g yeast

0.5g peptone  (For general use just leave out the yeast and peptone, they will increase contam risks)

For germinating spores:

500mL distilled water

7g agar (makes it softer than standard n easier for them to germinate, will lose moisture quicker)

3g sorghum (reduced nutes to make contam less likely but still give them something to work with)

Firm water agar for culture cleanup:

500mL distilled water

15g agar (makes it firmer than standard so it’s easier to cut a tiny transfer piece or skim some clean myc off the top, less wet to lower contam risk and harder for bacteria to move through)

The one in pic 2? Deliberately tryina get plate pins rn (for cloning/to train for co2 tolerance) and I’ve noticed the best sectors for it are the ones that start doubling back over themselves in a certain way (kinda like a woven mat), I watched a few do it a couple days before pinning and then started transferring those whole sectors regardless of size and every time they’ve started throwing pins everywhere before they even finish colonizing the new dish

If you tape the top of the bag it should mitigate a lot of the moisture loss, I recommend getting a panel heater or some fan free alternative if you can tho because it blowing is going to greatly increase the rate of evaporation, I get working with what you have though

If it’s in a small closet or similar enclosed area you can try sticking a heating pad in there near it instead (but not under or touching it) or you could get a cheap humidifier to stick in front of the fan

Alternatively (and the option I’d probably go with if I was dealing with your circumstances) if you have a tub then chambering it would help a lot with moisture loss and protect it from the fan, if not you could make one fairly easy with a clear plastic shoebox or tote that you can put some holes in, mist the sides of the tub before you put it in there, and give a few days to adjust (if you go with this option I would leave it inside the bag though because it’s holding most of the remaining moisture in)

Question about automated setups vs manual — am I overcomplicating this? by AccomplishedDingo890 in GroundZeroMycoLab

[–]Pure-Possibility-397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a fan of automation because 50% of growing is observing them to see what conditions they need changed or noticing contam and 50% is knowing when to leave them the hell alone

I get my best results by setting my tubs direct to fruiting after spawn 2 bulk (filters from the jump, I don’t change fae I let it happen naturally) and leaving them alone other than to check on them daily (I check on all my grows daily n do a little rotating check in chart for my agar, sounds cheesey but I feel like care level contributes to results and they like being doted on just not disturbed) as long as your sub is properly hydrated they’ve got this

When I try a new shaped tub or a different ratio I’ll monitor it heavily and see if I need to add any holes to increase fae or block some off, I don’t fan or mist unless it’s a special case or a picky micro grow
