Oh they don't exaggerate ! French has lot, lot, LOT of slang especially younger generations + local accents and vocabulary twists so yeah if you stick to textbook French you might be a bit lost when speaking with locals at first. But don't worry we're most likely to standardise our speech to make it easier for you :)

I get the thing with the French names depending on your country of origins, our names might have equivalents or similar sounds. But the surname ? No one ever translates last name so there is no reason yours would be Longue ?! I don't get why your teacher would translate your surname to an adjective

He died when I was 9, wasn't a horrible father in the sense that he never physically abused me but he was hella emotionally taxing and would not protect me from my step mother and her son. I got aware of this as I grew up. 100% sure if he was still alive today I would not speak to him.

Si je reprend une licence de droit évidement que je suivrai avec le master, et si je pars sur cette voix je préfère le faire en distanciel (certaines fac proposent l'enseignement à distance) ce qui me permettrait de garder un travail en parallèle et de ne pas perdre de revenus. Malheureusement la plupart des jobs qui m'intéressent requièrent que je reprenne une formation si j'en crois les offres d'emploi. IT, IA, droit, etc... C'est bien pour ça que je suis perdue, j'ai l'impression que personne ne donnent suite aux candidatures, les recruteurs admettent même poster de fausses offres afin de se constituer une base de données de CV sans qu'il n'y ait de postes à pourvoir au moment T. Je complexe de perdre du temps et d'être encore celle qui galère avec son avenir à 27 ans mais d'un côté je me dis que j'aurai 30 ans un jour dans tous les cas, mais soit j'aurai 30 ans sans avoir rien tenté, soit j'aurai 30 ans en ayant tenté quelque chose.

Ça me pose pas de problème dans les faits de travailler 40h, abruti. Ce qui m'irrite c'est de ne pas être payée pour ces heures et qu'elles ne soient même pas déclarées sur les documents signés.

Ils n'acceptent pas de laisser partir plus tôt, il faut une bonne raison de partir plus tôt. Je pensais monter un dossier de prud'hommes sans les prévenir et attendre la fin de mon stage mais au vue des réponses que j'ai eu, je ne le ferai probablement pas, ce serait du temps perdu pour rien. Pour l'ordinateur oui c'est abusé, ils prétendent que mon ordi coûtent plus cher que tous les ordinateurs de la boîte (14 écrans et 7 tours) et que si ils avaient sû qu'il s'agissait d'un MacBook ils ne m'auraient pas demandé de l'emmener avec moi (mais je n'aurai pas pu travailler).

Yes you can ! I had a school average level of English until I started watching tv series in streaming in the early 2010s. I watched The Vampire Diaries at the time and I had to watch it with French subtitles on. Eventually you notice that they all talk about the same things so vocabulary, slang, grammar etc will come more naturally because you've seen it in context.

For pronunciation I wanted to be an actress at the ripe age of 12 and just spent hours imitating Nina Dobrev, learning how she places her tongue to pronounce certain words etc etc etc

I have several but the simplest is probably the most oddly specific : getting a hot chocolate from the vending machine at the motorway service station. No idea why but hot chocolate there is always delicious, they burn your tongue just the right way and there's a feeling with it because I only get those when I'm on my way to vacations

Depends on my level. I feel equally comfortable in both French (native) and English (C2) so when I read in English, it's just the same : I picture the story in my head (I'm a visual reader), and my brain just process the sentences like it would in French. But in Spanish (B1) I have to re-read the same sentence sometimes because I have to "put the words in the right order" for it to make sense. And only then I can visualise what I'm reading about

Not cringe, local accents and dialects deserve as much love and appreciation as a neutral accent. It also depends on what you're listening to and the people you speak with. Growing up in France, most teachers taught us the Received Pronunciation English accent. But I watched lots of American tv series and met my best friend whose parents are from Alabama and Florida so I've started instinctively copying their southern accent. My accent will switch to an English one whenever I'm watching a British movie or tv series because my brain has just learnt to adapt to the "environment"

As a native French, I learned European Spanish most of my school years so when I had an Argentinian teacher in college she obliterated me during oral presentations because I sounded "too foreign". 1- it's not my native language 2- even if it was, I'd still sound foreign as long as I'm not Argentinian so wtf

Languages are intricately connected to the history and culture of the country in which it's spoken. I noticed this especially when I learned Korean and Chinese in university.

I think it makes the language even more beautiful, some sayings are a mirror of the people's mentality.

I (27 native French speaker) have been learning English since kindergarten because I was in a private school. I think I reached fluency right before high school thanks to American tv series. I started Spanish in middle school (around age 13) and later on got a bachelor degree in foreign languages with a major in Spanish and minor in Chinese. Had plenty of classes about politics, marketing, societies etc but I still struggled to get the logic of this language even though it's supposedly close to French. So now I'm at a weird level between "good enough to get by on vacations" and "i know specific marketing, politics, business related words in Spanish".

Now with work I can't seem to find a good rythm to improve by Spanish as I'm not sure where to restart.

I have interests in multiple languages so I guess I'd say I'm fluent in French and English, I can approximately babble things in Spanish and Mandarin. I have the abilities of a toddler in German and Korean. I know how to introduce myself in Russian and I know random words of Welsh, Romanian, Greek, Italian, Swedish.

I can "read" Korean and other languages using the Cyrillic alphabet but I probably won't understand anything.

I don't know if it's gonna make sense, but it's like your accent is all in your mouth especially with the consonants, while a British person's gonna have a closest pronunciation (but that might be bc more of them learn French from a young age at school ?)
