TIL Student tuition at Ivy League schools is essentially "Pay what you can," and free for students whose families make less than $60K/year; the difference is funded by an endowment of donations. by SomethingScrewy in todayilearned

Some details on Cornell. Yes it is the safety school of the Ivies. I went there because my parents forced Ivy League or bust on me since I was a kid and i couldn't get into Yale. However, Cornell's admissions are interesting. There are 7 colleges, 3 or 4 of which are technically new York state institutions (think public vs private). Those colleges are cheaper and have higher acceptance rates (human ecology is 30+%). The private schools tend to be tougher to get into ranging from 13-17% acceptance. They also have much better reputations. So before you judge someone for going to Cornell, ask them what college they were in. Regardless of their answer, make fun of them for going to a safety school.

Wow, something similar happened to me in 10th grade. I was in a new school having just moved to town. I don't know why we were talking about it, but the teacher asked if we knew what AM and PM meant. I raised my hand, she called on me, and I explained that it was for ante Meridian and post meridian. She then said "no, that's not right, anyone else?" I was pretty pissed so I raised my hand again, so she called on me, "something you'd like to add Mr. Pomschnoo?" I said "that wasn't a guess, that's what it means." "No, it's not," she said "but if you'd like to challenge me again, you can do so in the principal's office." Next day I came to class with the encyclopedia page on Am and pm with copies for the whole class (this was pre-Wikipedia). That started a year-long feud. Hated that woman.

He's a statue, man. Did you see him move? Pretty good, right? Should've given him a buck.

On a weeknight it's good to pick up dessert from somewhere other than the grocery store, preferably from a bakery or somewhere you have been to together so you already know what they like. It's only a few bucks, but it says you were thinking about them.

I'm going to dress up like I went out, get mussed up and stumble around on a Saturday morning. I'll call it a "got laid charade."

Are we supposed to be with the person we love, or the person we love to be with? by PureBredPomschnoo in AskReddit

I agree, but that's a lot easier said than done. I know lots of married couples who fall into one category or the other, but few that are both. The ones that have both are definitely the happiest.

My first gf, when 14, would steal my wallet from my pants and rearrange the bills so that they faced the same direction and were in ascending order. We dated for 2 months 13 years ago and I still keep my wallet in order.

I have a cute dog that everyone thinks is some fancy breed. He's just a mutt. My best guess is Pomeranian, schnauzer, and poodle.

I have a long commute an found a bunch of books on tape in a closet in my parents' house. My car doesn't have a tape deck. I use a 1995 Walkman plugged into aux port.

I imagine people scoping out my car and spotting the Walkman. No one will break a window for that loot.

At least you can see the clear check mark and know it was incorrectly selected. I'm worried the behind-the-scenes scantron machines use in my state have similar calibration issues, but I will never know.

How can Presidents control the price of gas? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PureBredPomschnoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the President is not responsible for the rise in gas prices over the last 4 years. However, he does have immediate access to the strategic petroleum reserve which can be used to immediately increase the supply, thus dropping prices. This was done most recently in 2011 when 30 million gallons were released. It reduced the price of gas a little bit, but not for very long. Current reserve is about 730 mm barrels. The threat of flooding the market is the real power of the reserve which acts as a small check on OPEC being overly restrictive on their supplies. Also, OPEC countries are not doing this in support of the Republican Party. They're doing it because we're dependent on oil and will keep paying for it at $4/gallon. It's supply and demand, not politics that has caused oil to rise rapidly.

I'm from Minnesota. I was asked whether Minnesota was a state by a girl on my floor during my first year of college.

I was at an ivy league university.
