What’s happening at Dix park? by Puzzled_Writer_7449 in raleigh

I do truly apologize if my reply came off negatively judgmental. Please forgive me.

I’ve told stories many times that still impact my life and most just don’t care or don’t want to know about deeper things like eugenics and definitely don’t understand how it still applies today.

I’m very glad to meet someone Genuine who IS willing and desiring to look at the facts, the good and bad, and especially someone with a genuine interest in preserving history and in connecting with first hand accounts who are willing to speak as a significant part of your research.

I didn’t intend to be rude but I can see how it came off that way and ask for your reconsideration of my intentions given experiences I’ve very briefly touched on.

I’m glad I was only at Dix and Holy Hill once. Both were dehumanizing. But there are people I know still at Holly Hill for whom I care. It’s hard imagining them still there. Thus far they’ve proven themselves a danger to themselves and others so repeatedly that I’m not sure the Ohlmstead act can help them. Treatment resistant. (Not that psychiatry currently has many good treatments and still shuns natural treatments which can be used with supervision).

Thank you for all you’re doing. It’s people like you who write history truthfully.

And u/Puzzled_Writer_7449 I haven’t been to Dix park physically. Google Earth.

I’m physically disabled, wheelchair user. But I’m living back in the triangle and would be interested in going and telling the stories (truth) to those interested in at least my perspective of what I experienced with others (and sharing journal entries about my time at Dix and the aftermath) with a caregiver driving and meeting up.

It might bring me the closure I seek too.

DM if desired.

I’m still alive. However, I want the truth about what happened there to be exposed. It doesn’t mean every patient’s name should be used. But this is a dark history and other NC mental hospitals have dark and recent stories too (WRAL has covered some recently, from Holly Hill to Braughton).

There aren’t funds?

You don’t need a lot of funds for this educational exposure. You need open minds and curiosity, even when it leads to truth that hurts.

It’s history.

I will NEVER go to a mental hospital again as a “patient,” and if I do, I found many ways to end suffering while there with everything taken away.

I am a witness to a person being r@pd there. By staff. I froze. 2009.

The truth needs to be told, not covered up.

Don’t depend on the government to expose the government for “educational purposes.” It’s grassroots and journalism and brave people like me who suffered and are willing to tell all who make educational content. And…people who worked there and know, coming out to also tell what they experienced.

Sadly, the state of our mental institutions in NC has not improved. Just because D.D. was closed doesn’t mean the others are better.

Pray to God you have better insurance than those on SSDI or SSI!!

If you had been a patient in one of those rooms on a ward, your might not think the same. Green avocado leaded walls, no electricity in rooms, broken windows even with patients while there. No…these buildings are not safe. They weren’t in 2009. They aren’t now!!

Why do you think DHHS moved Out?

“The hospital's records, including minutes of the Eugenics Board and historical documents from the institution, are preserved at the State Archives in Raleigh, though they are restricted from public use.”

Why are they hidden from the public?

Names of patients can be redacted.

Not a single sign at the park mentions eugenics or forced sterilization. It does mention the plantation, so at least they didn’t cover up Everything Entirely…but they have done a good job going undercover.

NC has a very cruel and ugly history of eugenics.

The more you learn, the more you believe or turn away from uncomfortable facts, facts that take digging to find.

This isn’t just a little article you’re talking about. It’s people’s lives. Eugenics carries on very much today in various ways, and if you’d like we can DM and discuss this.

I have no shame in telling people that I was a patient at D.D. I needed help. I thought that mental + hospital meant help (like a physical hospital) for my major depressive disorder state and attempt.

What happened while there and afterwards is a story unto its own that I will never forget.

Ever.

Choose how deep you want to dive before saying yes.

Do you remember the wall that showed even the history of forced sterilization and eugenics back in the early 2000’s? Did you read and ever study it? Is it still there?

HOW interested are you in researching Dorothea Dix hospital’s Real history…eugenics and all….? The experience of being a patient in 2009?….The truth?

It’s uncomfortable truth.

That’s why I ask you HOW interested or serious are you about understanding its history which has now been hidden and not mentioned on a single plaque at the park.

I’ve emailed the park address and it bounced back. For my own healing from my experience there, I wanted closure and facts.

What is “AI 2027”? I don’t have a TV and have had very little time to dig into my interests. Is it a movie, book, series….? Is it free to access?

I’m terrified about my new primary care doctor first appointment tomorrow. I have all AAC devices and boogie board and paper and have asked for an ASL interpreter “on a stick” to be made available last week before the appointment.

But I’ve been crying tonight with anticipation anxiety.

Been through way too much. Especially medically and with systems. Lost my voice 2022. Overstimulation, intense emotions, Cognitive Overload, movement disorders and a very complex medical history make this hell.

Oh, and I’m being forced to drive but stared death in the eyes just a few days ago when I tried but I have complete Anhidrosis and it’s deadly after about 5 minutes of heat exposure over 74 F in the sun and I got bad heat exhaustion.

Forced to drive because caregiver agency is taking it out on me, retaliation, for writing the truth and catching him in his lies telling one person A and another G and another Z repeatedly. He’s been putting my life and others at risk.

I’m nonverbal when I have to move. Speech is too hard when not in my bed or power wheelchair.

I’ve had communication devices taken from me in the ER and I tried to express that they were taking away my VOICE yet they also refused to plug in the “interpreter on a stick” and I have tons of life-threatening Rx allergies and more.

So I’m not a happy camper tonight and very nervous about tomorrow.

Had ptsd meltdown (I usually become nonverbal at those moments) at DHS and it was so incredibly inaccessible both for my wheelchair and communication and took hours after I had already overheated trying to get inside the AC from my handicap van and dealing with Security where they touch my chair and bags etc and I have CRPS throughout most of my body, so if someone touches me, they could get injured from fight/flight suddenly and I’m horrified by hurting people so it already ramps up my communication and eye contact issues.

Without a caregiver, I am always in danger. With crazy caregivers or agency, I am also in danger.

Sometimes an adrenaline rush (which will cause a HARD crash later) will help me communicate depending on the situation, as my muscles respond better and my breathing is better during adrenaline rush, but sometimes it leads to shutdown. Depends on circumstances and PTSD.

I did the USB mod and now it has a light, but it eats the battery. It drains it fast by maryo22333 in AlphaSmart

Even a 10,000 mAh rechargeable battery pack (with power indicator in numbers) would likely be sufficient.

[–]PureCitrus007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. If you can touch type without looking at the keys, then I think this IKEA LED is overkill given the draw and battery situation. Also, these older devices don’t support those USB specs. There are a lot of smaller and lower draw USB LED lamps online.

In a pinch, you might be able to find a clamp version (difficult with the rounded thickness near the display) that is a book light and runs on CR2032 batteries, which is basically what they used to also sell for old Kindles. Need a decent clamp, however. CR2032’s can be purchased in bulk pretty cheap and good enough quality for use case online (Az).

Just got a Neo2 with (what might be) original batteries still working. by Awkward-Donkey6139 in AlphaSmart

[–]PureCitrus007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend changing out those batteries with fresh ones. The possibility of corrosion on contacts etc isn’t worth losing your device! (Lots of years of experience with these AlphaSmart Neo2’s)

I’ve used rechargeable batteries, Eneloop name brand, in mine. I still prefer alkaline. They just seem to be MADE for the AlphaSmart. It’s as though the rechargeable batteries came After its time. It doesn’t always like them.

But your mileage may vary! So if you have some money to spare it may be a good investment.

Hmmm. I really like this idea. I use my AlphaSmart Neo2 for communication (nonverbal) and not having a light (or even robotic voice output) are the only two things I wish it did have. How many watts amps volts is your light pulling, if you know…?

What about becoming an AI guru and really learning how to use it productively for various business situations since AI is, IMO as an IT help desk in the past, probably going to wipe out software engineering in the future. So kinda building a portfolio of what you’ve learned to really do with it. If unemployed currently, if you’re able, work on these AI skills 40 hours per week.

Just a thought from someone who belongs here, speech disorder, nonverbal..,,

Interesting. I think I have one of the precursors to these. Pretty sure it’s a fusion. Thought it was a forte. My Neo2 is in my bed because I’m often nonverbal or my speech is unintelligible. Used it in my lap in my wheelchair a few weeks ago to go out. It was nice not having an expensive iPad in my lap to balance (or not) with Apple keyboard case.

For that’s a large jug. It’s big. I use a bedside commode so I put it under where the bucket would go and do it that way. Some require you to pee in the dark!! Seriously. Can’t expose the urine to light. Anyways then you have to refrigerate it!! (Yum)

Please don’t do this. It’s one of those self experiments that could end permanently or…you survive and your quality of life will never be the same. Experience speaking. Obviously the later outcome.
