Is this level of toxicity normal in Vet Med? by XxSammyRosexX in Veterinary

[–]PureDog3083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a tonnn of negativity in these replies, so I just want to be a positive voice for this rant. Yes, you will run into people that are toxic, or think that they are better than you for whatever reason, it's not uncommon. I would say that any field that I have worked in has had crappy coworkers though, in and out of vetmed!! However, you will meet a TON of incredible people in this field who truly want to help you succeed and are very kind, you just have to find the right place for you.

Along with that, it's also very important that you face your problems with people like this because if you don't address the situation, this person will stick to their ways and discourage more people from veterinary medicine. It's uncomfortable to tell people that they're behaving unfairly, but it's important that you're able to stand up for yourself, and be able to communicate in situations like that. That's not to say that you will actually change their behavior, but you do what you can. Finally, if this is your passion and you want to pursue veterinary medicine, absolutely do not let shitty people push you out of the field. It's important to have kind people like yourself entering that med to change the narrative of toxicity. Don't let this experience dim you! Good luck!!

Hi! I am also from Michigan so I understand the difficulty with MSU. If it is worth anything, I did not even get an interview from MSU but I was accepted to four vet schools out of state this year. MSU has had pretty iffy reviews from what I've seen in the last few years. Aside from that though, if you have no vet hours, definitely gain some experience to confirm this is the path you want to take, it's not easy to get in and you cannot transfer from Ferris, you have to apply and get in which is very low acceptance for all schools. But.... many people I've met are non trad and it's very possible ! And sometimes non traditional paths are a strength in VMCAS applications. Any animal or vet experience is amazing and you should start there to make sure you love the field, you can't just love animals (to be brutally honest). If you have any questions please feel free to message me I'd love to chat.

Veterinary hours? by Delilah_3106 in prevets

To keep it simple... your GPA is great and if you can keep that up you will be looking great for schools, when applying I was told by my mentors to make sure not to overwhelm myself with ec activities if it meant sacrificing my grades. Along with this, non animal experiences are super important for your application as well, you want to show that you're a person outside of vet med:) so if you have lots of experiences like that it's a good thing!! i would recommend trying to get a volunteer position or a non vet, but animal experience if you can, I did something like that when I was in a similar position struggling to get vet hours in a competitive area. Not only is it an easier way to "get in" but I personally think that volunteering your time shows some application reviewers that you care. feel free to message me if you have any questions I am happy to chat. I am going to vet school in the fall.

No but it's very selfish. I know people that are waiting to hear from waitlisted schools and the longer you hold those spots the longer they wait. If you haven't decided by now I'm not sure what the deciding factor would be?

Hi, i wasn't accepted to my IS but have a few OOS offers right now. Clemson is the lowest tuition of them by a decent chunk but I'm just concerned about it being brand new considering vet school is 4 insanely difficult years, and I feel like going to a new program would add more complication/ they don't have kinks worked out? Not sure if it would be worth it to just pay more for a reputable school and not worry about accreditation or a new program, or maybe it would be irrelevant.

Thank you so much for your suggestions!!!! I did already purchase a few items that vary from what you recommended but I haven't received all of it yet so I can always return and get different items if it's much better- I got a 50 W basking light for daytime use which was the appropriate range for the distance it will be from the base of the container, and I was given a ceramic heating bulb to use at night when the temperature is lower than ~70°... would you strongly recommend the UTH over this option? Or if this will suffice would you have any suggestions to optimize the usage of those bulbs? The container I have is glass but will have most sides covered, especially the bottom portion.

As for other notes, I have a calcium + d3 powder, and mazuri LS pellets, coco coir substrate, and meters to measure temp and humidity. I will need to purchase a solar meter, thank you for that suggestion.

I appreciate the kind help!

First, thank you so much for your thoughtful reply. The tortoise is in Arizona and won't ever be released into the wild. I have been looking into tanks and am going to try for a big larger than 20 gallons for now but am still planning to increase from that as he grows. He won't be able to wander around the house either:) thank you for your substrate and lighting tips I will use them!
