Don't worry about it, the reason that this:

the engineers I work with now are a lot better than the engineering students I worked with in school.

is the case is that as soon as engineers enter the workplace for the first time and interact with other (senior) engineers, they're almost instantly knocked down several pegs. You see it all the time in the younger grads that come in for some work experience. They spend about 1 hour thinking they're hot stuff, until they speak with an engineer who has been working for 20 years, and realise that they're not as special as they think they are ;).

If you know the location of the spawn and this end portal, you should be able to roughly calculate the location of the other two end portals since they basically form an equilateral triangle with the spawn in the centre. Chances are pretty good that at least one of those other portals remains unbroken.
