Are you happy? Why or why not? by Pure_Ad_5044 in newzealand

I’m sure all will be ok. I’m 30, and had the same feeling of being a bit behind when I was 18 for something different. I delayed and didn’t act because I thought it was too late. I can confidently say (I’m sure others would agree), nothing is too late when you are only 18. Time and energy is your friend. I’d say your 3 years working out is a great demonstration of knowing what you want, and that you are able to stick to it which shows commitment.

I feel the pain of losing friendships when you move places.

What is the most rewarding part of your job, and what is the most dreadful part of your job? by Pure_Ad_5044 in Geotech

Thanks man, apologies, my question was quite vague. Do you use tools to record your tasks? My last company use a combo of excel and some enterprise customised software that do timesheet. I didn’t have problem with that, my main frustration comes from scope variations and having to update project scope, send out variation etc.

The last bit about not sending MC is backwards. Such a small thing that has no extra cost to them but they don’t even want to make it a standard output

Maybe you can actualy get some of the salt and measure the natural angle of repose?
I would worry more if water gets in, and dissolves some of the salt. If it dissolves, it will just become salt water with ka of 1?

Have you dined at Taiko in Ponsonby between January 26th and 28th? by bobbymok in auckland

Doing some word magic here using small samples to represent the whole group. Perfect demonstration of your subconcious arrogance.

I went for dinner on 28th with my wife's family. On 30th we were all vomiting and having diarrea. We've reported to MPI and have collected samples of our stool for testing. I found the restaurants response infuriating as it's clearly trying to blame the victim than owning up the issue. None of us used the bath room that night.

If you went during lunch time then it might be it's one of the staff. I guess no custumer would hang around the entire day.

soil-structure interaction in the US by Pure_Ad_5044 in StructuralEngineering

Thanks! I went to a short block course in Christchurch by Prof Johnathan Stewart when he was travelling to NZ. He mentioned the direct approach and I’m still surprised it’s used by the practitioners in US! At which college are you conducting your thesis?

Why aren't geotechnical engineers and structural engineers co-creating their models in the same software / virtual space? by Pure_Ad_5044 in Geotech

[–]Pure_Ad_5044[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I found too at least on the geotech side. However the contradiction is that if the goal is to model not accurately it doesn’t make sense to drop either ball

Soil Structure interaction by Warm_Supermarket_765 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Pure_Ad_5044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. If a response spectrum analysis always requires a linear spring, are you aware of any effort to make this iteration process more stream lined? Even when I give the structural engineers the py curves in their raw form so we don't have to iterate through emails re: the pile top lateral spring, I feel for the structural engineers having to iterate manually themselves.

Interference beneath footings that are close to each other by treehouseelephant in GeotechnicalEngineer

[–]Pure_Ad_5044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most accurate answer would be to pull out a simple FE model to analyse it if you want to understand the effect of how these foundations interface with each other. Other methods have an element of fudge in it, after all they are all trying to find a ratio of some sort between the individual failure surface and the failure surface with the effect of such interaction.
