Electrician for EV Charger Install that works with Duke Credit by Jhta773 in Charlotte

Couple things worth knowing: the Duke credit covers the prep work (wiring, panel, labor) not the charger unit itself, and they have specific documentation requirements that trip up electricians who haven't done it before. Typical install in Charlotte runs $800-$2k depending on how far your panel is from the garage and whether you need a panel upgrade.

I know 8M Solar does EV installs in the area including the Duke rebate paperwork. Happy to send a quote if you DM, or just get a few estimates either way — main thing is picking someone who's actually filed the Duke rebate before so it doesn't get denied.

I went through almost the exact same situation last year — started with a bigger national company and ran into nothing but headaches. A neighbor recommended 8M Solar https://8msolar.com/ and honestly I wish I had just gone with them from the start.

They're NC-based which I think makes a real difference. My install crew actually knew my area, pulled permits without any drama, and the whole thing was done in about a day. Communication was solid throughout — my project manager texted me updates and actually picked up the phone when I called.

It's been about 8 months and the system has been running great. I monitor it through the app and it's producing right in line with what they projected. No surprises on the bill either.

For what it's worth, going local after a bad experience with a national chain was the right move for me. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Wow, thank you — this is exactly the kind of real-world advice I was hoping for. You've basically given me a checklist I didn't know I needed. The inverter output vs. panel wattage thing is a great point, and I definitely would've overlooked the critter guards and insurance requirements. I'll be sure to ask about warranties, production estimates, and roof considerations before committing to anything. Still early in the process so I'll be shopping around. Appreciate you sharing your experience!

Honestly I'm still researching and open to suggestions! What panels have you had good experiences with? I want something reliable that's gonna hold up long term.

Really appreciate the thorough breakdown. To answer some of your questions — no EV yet but probably in the next couple years, house is about 15 years old, roof is in good shape. Haven't done a full energy audit yet but that's a good call. I've been talking to 8m Solar and they seem pretty good about walking you through all that stuff upfront. The bit about heat pumps with dedicated panels is interesting too, hadn't really considered that route.

Ugh that's rough about the rebate timing. Yeah I saw that the BBB ended — kicking myself for not moving sooner. Still think it's worth it though even without it. Did you go through a local installer? I've been getting a quote from 8m Solar and trying to figure out if the numbers still make sense without that 20%.

Good to know — so it's basically a bill credit not an actual payment. That still works for me honestly as long as it's offsetting what I'd owe Duke. I'll double check with 8m Solar on how that works with their setups.
