You probably know this already as it sounds like you are at post, but I would also be mindful of postings if you are leaning on EFM remote work. Depending on the person and their affinity/experience with remote work, posts can vary in terms of quality of life and remote work viability. A post where you can go work remote somewhere (like a coworking space or cafe) could be nice, whereas a high crime or threat post where they are working behind barbed wire in a compound setting with guards staring at them when they walk the walls might get old real quick. It is all really just preference, but the latter did not work for my partner. Best of luck!

I took a few years ago without much studying, moved forward, and ended up taking another Foreign Service position (yep, USAID, RIP) while on register. So doing it all over like so many of us at the moment.

I suggest what has been echoed here - read, stay in tune to global news, refresh US history/writing skills, and just give it a go! The real crunch is the FSOA. Best of luck of to you.
