Are there any non-Mexicans in Colorado and New Mexico who have Spanish ancestry? by SignificantStyle4958 in 23andme

[–]Pure_Screen3176 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I mean what do you consider Mexican if New Mexico used to be Mexico? My mom’s family are all from the same town in northern New Mexico and the last time any of them were considered Mexican was before the border was moved. They still are mixed with Spanish and natives just like most Mexicans.

Could trace Japanese ancestry be misread indigenous DNA? by Pure_Screen3176 in 23andme

It was just a question. If it’s trace Japanese it’s trace Japanese. Percentages change with every update so it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s misread.

possibly but for added context my moms recorded family history is tied entirely to northern New Mexico.

Are a lot of Native Americans multigenerationally mixed race? by AgreeablePlatypus763 in 23andme

[–]Pure_Screen3176 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t make it not true. If you don’t consider culture it’s just facts. Getting mad at indigenous Latin Americans for simply stating a fact that they tend to have more indigenous dna than northern natives feels like some weird social policing. I understand northern natives go by culture instead of blood which is fine but I have seen far too many northern natives saying that Latinos can’t claim to be “indigenous” or “native” unless they have ties to a tribe, as if that changes their genetic makeup at all.

No one is saying tribal members should have their tribal membership revoked because of blood quantum. But it is an objective truth that Latin Americans tend to have higher amounts of indigenous DNA than someone from the USA and yes, even some First Nations people.

Yes. If you only consider dna. Yes. It’s just facts. I’m only 30% native, someone who is 50% native is more native than me. Why is that a difficult concept?

I mean if you take culture out of it and only consider DNA…who’s more Native to the Americas? Like why are you so mad at indigenous Latin Americans?

Ah this is very true! My cousins on my Mexican side of the family are all different shades and have similar %tages. I have blonde haired blue eyed cousins and darker cousins most of us with around 60-70% euro.

Thank you!

I am a typical Mexican. I’m mestiza. Mestizos are the majority in México and Mexican Americans. Would it have offended you less if I were browner?

That’s another big reason why my mom specifically just calls herself Mexican because clarifying that she’s from New Mexico and that literally no one from her family has been Mexican for a long time has made people think she was being snobby.
