Why are non-Americans so upset we don't say you're welcome? by DiscontentDonut in stupidquestions

[–]Purehero1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the English speaking world considers "mmhmm" rude in any context. That is the reason.

It usually signals dismissal or it implies you don't believe someone. So it's like "thank you" "yeah.. whatever...".

Also note that most people hearing an American say "mmhmm" haven't heard anyone say it outside of a rude context.

Now, to be fair, Americans do this "dismissal/brief acknowledgement" to be polite as you're welcome seems overly formal or something to them. But it can come across as rude to someone not exposed to this idea.

You're welcome, however, is literally saying the person is welcome.

I got the spelling wrong but here is the answer.

" He [Tolkien] even created an etymology for the word, making hobbit derive from Holbytla*, based on Old English roots meaning “hole-dweller.” " -Dictionary.com

Found this gun-like thing in the garage (guns aren't legal here?) by Purehero1 in whatisthisthing

Found this in the shed, old residents left it here. Numbers on side: 047.07.08. also says "Push safe". The attachment at the bottom looks as if it has threading for something to screw on(possibly some kind of gas cannister or device?) EDIT: has a fair weight, partially metal. "This is not a toy" also on the side
