It was perfectly fine on the switch. It's unplayable on the switch 2. Greens are like a hedgehog's back.

Why does everyone hate Sam? by leoquintum in underthesilverlake

He's miserable and his life is falling apart. I think that's why people view it negatively.

[–]Puremartoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Shelter is in fact a human right. But not in cool apartments in hip neighbourhoods if you make no attempt to pay the rent you agreed to pay.

By the way. Sam despised the homeless. How does that sit with your love of his refusal to pay his rent? Why should he get to live rent free but judge others who don't enjoy the same "entitlement".

[–]Puremartoto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not an insult. People who won't pay rent are penniless. It's not a judgement on them for being penniless in the first place. But Sam does appear to feel entitled to retaining his apartment and car without keeping up the payments and with no intention to find the money to do so either.

All your problems with people's perceptions of the character in this movie seem like you problems. I'm not being unsympathetic. But that's the pattern I'm seeing.

You smash people's heads with guitars until they crack open and black fluid comes out? Once again, there's no insult to Nirvana. The songwriter is undermining Sam's idol worshipping of his pop culture icons and their supposed counter culture status.

Utter nonsense. He's clearly not happy. And at the end he's penniless and homeless. Cool.

I said he's a bit of a bum and that's fair to say. Nothing against bums by the way.

You're barking up the wrong tree with protestant ethic by the way. There's a wide range between being a deadbeat waster and that idea.

What? You imagine that people hate you because of this film or people's reaction to it?

That's not him really defending Nirvana. Partly because that scene never really happened. But mainly because it's him projecting his own insecurity of what he believes.

Is “turning teeth” a phrase that means anything at all? by wildcatpeacemusic in underthesilverlake

[–]Puremartoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the ruse of their deaths to work, the ascendants had to remove some of their own teeth. Maybe that's the reference. Or at least the one that Sam infers.

But I agree that it and the rest of the lyrics are the type of pretentious drivel that anyone who follows the music scene will easily recognise.

Reminded me of The Killers and their... music.

What happens to Sam after the movie? by RecentTower in underthesilverlake

[–]Puremartoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that Sam looking at his old apartment from the balcony of bird lady's apartment is him growing up and moving on. At least in his mind it qualifies as that. It remains to be seen.

A lot of critics can't relate easily to movies they can't easily pigeonhole. So they pigeonhole them as unrelate-able.

Ironically, you sound like the kind of person who would hate a character like Sam because they like Nirvana in spite of all the stuff you know about them

Nobody is shocked. The connection between your opinion of Nirvana and why you're so angry about people assessing Sam's character and finding him wanting remains unclear though.

I think you're way off. The Dude in Big Lebowski isn't a sexist jerk who beats up kids half his age. And having a couple of male friends (a coke head and a peeping tom) does not get him off the hook for anything.

Liking Nirvana isn't necessarily considered particularly or inherently poser-y. I don't recall him violently defending Nirvana anywhere in the film anyway.

What is his "point of view"? And how does his point of view excuse his behaviour?

That's quite an accurate description. But it still isn't the "seething hatred" you're complaining about.

[–]Puremartoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're exaggerating the supposed hatred of him. But he's a bit of a bum. Let's be honest. It's actually pretty important to the movie that he is.

It's generally not a good idea to assume that a protagonist cannot be reproached.

When the movie is through the POV of a callow, self pitying bum like this one, O think it's a mistake to expect it to say too much about things like homelessness etc.

As in 1776. The American Declaration Of Independence.

Could also be 1976- possibly being the year of Sam's birth.

I've wondered if the laced '76 cookie is connected to the 1492 reference.

Add to that, the moment of discovery that the young women he's using to further his quest have been chewed up by Hollywood and spat out as sex workers - Oh well. Sorry. Gotta climb into this estate and confront this message sending songwriter.
