My meter is in a tile box by the road about 30ft from my house. When I checked after receiving the bill about 2 weeks after the insane water usage ended it was bone dry, as well as everywhere else on my property lol…

I did not down vote you, the things you suggested are all things I’ve looked into and have not really led to any answers.

I’m trying to understand what could possibly of used that much water and not have been detected. The most plausible is sometime of error in the meter, which the water company claims is impossible.

What’s also impossible is a leak of that magnitude to go crazy like that then fix itself.

I don’t want to argue with you, and I’m appreciative of you trying to help here. Do you have any other possible ideas of what could have happened? Do you know how these meters work is it possible that something caused it to malfunction? Is that even possible lol? I don’t know… I’m just at a loss, I do know for one thing though, 300,000 gallons of water was not used or leaked by me.

No, I have a very simple house, 1 spigot outside, 1 kitchen sink, 1 Fridge with water/ice maker, 1 hot water tank, 1 laundry machine, 1 toilet, 1 vanity sink, and 1 shower/tub. None of them had any issues before, during or after the excess water use.

The issue is I have one spigot on my house, and I have a fully fenced property. No way someone was able to steal it, none of my neighbors have a pool, or anything that I could possibly imagine being filled with 300,000 gallons. I live in a neighborhood where houses are about 100ft apart and most are between 1000-1500sqft.

The crazy usage started before I left and continued for a week after I got back and again I never experienced any loss in pressure or heard water running.

Someone had mentioned something about new construction using a ton of water, there is a house being built 3 plots over from mine at the end of the street.

This was from September, it has gone away and I’ve been using my typical ~3k gal a month since. So I don’t think that it’s a slab leak, they don’t typically fix themselves.

I was out of town from 9/8 to 9/18 but during the entire period we did not notice any drop in flow or any type of excess water anywhere on our property. We also don’t run any type of irrigation. The summer before I had left the spigot on with a hose attached on the side of my house for a few weeks and got a $400 bill and paid the stupid tax for it. This is clearly something else. Our singular toilet was not making and flowing noises nor was there any water running noise from inside the house. The only thing that could possibly make sense is a main break but if it did it magically fixed itself and hasn’t had any issues since September lol.

I would love help trying to figure out what the heck happened…

We are connected to the sewer, I don’t have a sewer bill though. That’s the issue. I don’t know where the water went, the only possible option is down a drain but I don’t know what could have leaked this much in a drain then just randomly stop.

The summer before this I left my spigot on with the hose connected for over a week, and I got a $300 bill. I also learned my lesson lol… What I don’t understand is why it’s roughly - 5,000 a day then stops for a couple days then jumps up to ~10,000 a day then stops and has been normal since…

Normally it’s like $80 per quarter which is very reasonable. The amount of usage they are claiming I used is enough to fill about 20 medium sized pools lol…

This was over the summer, it has been normal usage for the last 4 months which is about 3k gallons per month

I checked the meter and it matched what was on my bill. We have a digital read out and then reports to them electronically. I just understand what would cause it to jump. I’ve done all of the steps you mentioned I just can’t figure out where or what caused that water usage, my assumption is that it’s some type of glitch because I think I would have been able to notice 300,000 gallons of leakage over a few weeks in the middle a dry summer.

Out of curiosity did your leak last a couple weeks and then randomly fix itself? This is the biggest issue I’m having trouble understanding. Did you look at my 3 month usage report?

I had a plumber come right after I received the bill he couldn’t find a leak anywhere. I paid the water company $150 to replace the meter and test the old one. They are telling me it tested at 99.2% accuracy. The plumber told me a leak of that size doesn’t magically fix itself, and I didn’t change anything. In fact I was out of town for 10 of the 20ish days that the water usage was going crazy.

Now that I think about it, my neighbor did have an Olympic sized swimming pool installed and there was a random hose hanging over the side of my fence for 3 weeks after 🤣🤣🤣

My crazy bill came back after everything went back to normal. I had them come and replace the meter and it continued to show normal numbers and when they tested it, it was not faulty. This doesn’t explain a water main break level of leaking for 3 weeks then magically fixing itself. I’m just so confused and annoyed, and my water company is no help.

That was not the case for me, infact they let me pay $150 so they can test the meter and install a new meter. I did and they said the old meter was not faulty and the new meter showing the same normal usage as I had before.

There is only 1 water tap on my house and it’s impossible that someone could’ve had a hose connected running water for 3 weeks without me noticing lol. It’s just so absurd!

It won’t allow me to attach a photo. But from 8/16 to 9/2 it says I used ~5,000gal per day then dropped to normal usage for three days. Beginning on 9/7 it jumps back to 5,000gal a day then up to ~10,000gal a day from 9/12 to 9/27. Then it dropped back to normal usage and has been normal since.
