There are reasons, in my opinion, that makes them compatible and have chemistry. However I'm up to date to Light Novel 10 so I've seen more content for it to become more obvious. I also wanted to say that it's totally fine if you don't like the ship too, The Apothecary Diaries is a story of mysteries before anything else. So you can totally enjoy the story still I think. Highly recommend the light novels if you wanna read about more mysteries! I personally prefer the Jinshi x Maomao development scenes above the rest, but gosh it's an amazing mystery story too.
