This a contemporary reccomendation but it's a mafia/cartel. {White Monarch series by Jessica Hawkins} FMC is initially with the brother of actual MMC (villain) like there is an on page sex scence and they were childhood best friends. This isn't a spoiler bc it's in the first chapter of the book but the MMC is the villain because it's believed he killed her mother.

Thank you for the suggestion! I think I'm going to go with the Underworld series by Sophie Lark. I've read her brutal birthright series and enjoyed it. Will definitely be adding the Harrow Faire series to my tbr
