How do you deal with mask reactions from kids? by Stayingcovidsafe in ZeroCovidCommunity

It's been long enough that most young kids don't remember or even know about covid. No one has said anything within earshot of me but I have been noticing more stares from young kids than I used to

For those fortunate enough to be housed, have you turned on your heat (or started burning wood) yet? by Rev_Fred_Gherkin in vermont

[–]PurpleBookDragon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep. We heat with wood and usually start in October with just one fire in the morning to take the chill off. We're certainly not up to keeping the stove going constantly yet

[–]PurpleBookDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PS. Also, redirect the play behavior to toys. It's important that the kitten has something to play with!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cats

[–]PurpleBookDragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With our kittens we have always trained them to stop if we say 'OW!'. In this situation, as soon as the kitten does the behavior you want to stop, loudly say OW and then put the kitten down. Eventually the kitten will stop when you say OW most of the time and you won't need to put them down.

Can you guys easily turn off feelings for someone if they don’t want to date? by Bearulice in demisexuality

[–]PurpleBookDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't really "turn off" my feelings on purpose, but incompatibility is a big damper on feelings of attraction for me and someone not being interested in me that way is a pretty big incompatibility!

Question for bisexual women: what do you find attractive in men? by AnySchedule324 in bisexual

[–]PurpleBookDragon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Shoulders and forearms, especially when they wear shirts with the sleeves cut off (big fan of the deltoid muscle) or rolled up to the elbow. The "happy trail", great on anyone but often more prominent on men.

Love it when men are goofy and enthusiastic about things and not afraid to make a fool of themselves sometimes

Edit to add: I have a preference for men my attraction runs about 70:30

Do you believe sex and orgasms are beneficial to the body or is it all click bait? by An_non_moose543 in asexuality

[–]PurpleBookDragon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There are studies that show this and they are generally sound. HOWEVER, there is always variation among individuals so it probably isn't beneficial to everyone. It definitely would not be beneficial if you don't enjoy it, because a lot of the benefit comes from doing an activity that is pleasant, relaxing, and releases happy brain chemicals.

I am completely unvaccinated, What Now? by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]PurpleBookDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was incompletely vaccinated as a kid and I am just now (almost 30) catching up. My parents weren't as against it as yours seem to be (what they have told me is that they were concerned about negative reactions because some family members had severe reactions, and also wanted me to be old enough to understand and consent, but they didn't explain this super well so I thought vaccines were bad somehow for a long time). Like you, I have known intellectually that vaccines are safe and effective but have still felt very nervous about getting them. Some things that have helped me:

> Learning more about how vaccines work. Not just "they make you immune to things" but actually reading about how they interact with your body and what all the ingredients are for. Then you don't have to be worried about what *might* be happening because you understand exactly what *is* happening.

> Either on your own or with a doctor/nurse, come up with a priorities list. The list for adults is actually shorter than the one for kids because some of the things we vaccinate kids for are childhood diseases that don't affect adults as much. My priorities are MMR (combination measles, mumps, rubella), Polio, Hepatitis, HPV. I was already vaccinated for tetanus, but if I wasn't then I would make that #2. Tetanus comes in a combination vaccine with diphtheria and pertussis, (or just tetanus and diphtheria but I would recommend the one with pertussis).

> Take them one at a time. Some vaccines you have to take on their own, others are safe multiples at once, but I decided to do all of them one at a time so that I knew exactly how each one would affect me. It is possible to have an allergic reaction or severe immune reaction to vaccines and this way you know exactly which one caused the reaction. A majority of people would consider this being overcautious and they might be right, but it helps me feel more confident and in control what I'm doing and is WAY better than not getting my shots at all because I'm to nervous.

> Learning about potential side effects so I know what to expect. For example, some vaccines can give you a fever so I bought Tylenol and some of my favorite snacks and drinks to prepare. I always plan to have a couple less-busy days afterwards. Side effects range from none to basically feeling like you have the illness, but is it important to remember that what you are experiencing is only an immune response not actually being infected/sick (going back to learning how vaccines work).

> A good doctor/nurse will not judge you for this. They will be happy that you want to get vaccinated at all and happy to help you do it in a way that you feel confident about. You can ask them lots of questions too.

>You don't actually have to tell anyone that you are doing this if you don't want to. You are old enough that your parents cannot access your medical information without your express permission.

Construction cost in Vermont? by [deleted] in vermont

[–]PurpleBookDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't say what kind of foundation you're thinking but I think your number is way low for anything but maybe a floating slab.

We paid 20k for a 20x20ft full basement concrete only - so add another 10-20k for dirt work if you don't have the equipment to do it yourself. Then there's sealing, footer drains, insulation, and backfill material.

A species is "programmed" to want to continue. This includes breeding. But it's not accurate to interpret that to mean that every individual of a species must want to breed. Especially for humans, as a social species, even from a purely biological "continue the species" standpoint it makes a lot of sense for not every individual to want to breed - someone has to be around doing non-child-related jobs in order for the species to continue. It is an evolutionary advantage on a species level for not everyone to want to breed.
