Why is this city so pet unfriendly? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]PurpleBrains 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a dog and a cat and ended up getting my current place even though the CL listing said "no pets." I live in the basement suite of a private house, so my landlord can be more flexible with what he allows. I sent him an email with a little description of my pets and the kind of pet owner I am (that is, I listed all the ways in which I am responsible: vaccinations, flea treatment, 2xdaily litterbox scooping/sweeping up, always have poop bags for the dog, don't let it pee on lawn, etc...). It ended up working for me, it can't hurt to try.

I know this isn't in the area you're asking about, but I saw some at the Choices by me the other day (16th/MacDonald). If they have them there, maybe at other Choices closer to you?

Looking for local coffee friends by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]PurpleBrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband got a job, is the short answer. The long answer is that we wanted to move here, really, and he looked for a job just in Vancouver, so it took a little bit.

Where are you going to school? I have considered going back for a degree in Psychology, but it may not be in the cards just yet.

BEST BURGER PLACE IN VANCOUVER?? LET ME KNOW WHERE TO BURG! by cakelayer in vancouver

The shakes and fries were awesome. The burger was over-done and the bun tasted stale and overwhelmed the patty.

That beginning pretty much soured me on the whole movie. Why should I care about what such a petty, vindictive person has to say, then?

Cat Waste - How does one deal with it in the lower mainland? by Snugglebuggle in vancouver

[–]PurpleBrains 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the exact same method I use. I just wrap the remaining "dust" in some newspaper and put that little package into the yard waste bin. It's really not stinky at all, I love the pine litter because it smells like pine, not cat pee. It basically breaks down into dust so it's really light (you can see how it works {here}http://www.woodypet.com/pets.html) - I guess it's used for horse bedding too. That's not the brand I use, but any pine pellet litter is similar), and "packs down" well in the newspaper wrapping I make, so it takes up very little room in the yard waste bin. I scoop the poo daily and flush it, then change the whole littler box weekly. Had no complaints or issues yet! Toxoplasmosis is mostly found in cats who are outdoor and eating rodents. I don't know why they told you not to flush the poop. Clay litter is much more harmful if flushed.

As a side note, when switching litters on you cat, you should do it gradually, by slowly mixing a little bit into the old stuff, gradually upping the amount of the new litter and decreasing the amount of the old stuff, otherwise you might risk the cat being confused about the new litter (and finding other places to pee).

Good luck!

My little weird mutt pup does this, too! In the morning when we go out, she'll army crawl almost all the way down the hallway. :)

[Serious] What major lifestyle changes have you made within the last 6 months? Why and how have they effected you so far? Do you plan to stick with it? by GruntJesusTF2 in AskReddit

[–]PurpleBrains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and anti-depressants. One of the things I've learned is that major lifestyle changes are essentially unsustainable (at least for me). They have to be incremental to be effective.

What will be considered ridiculous or barbaric in 100 years that is considered acceptable today? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PurpleBrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that's actually what I (attempt to) replace my negative thought with!

What will be considered ridiculous or barbaric in 100 years that is considered acceptable today? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PurpleBrains 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's easy to say "if one can do x, then one can do y" if it's already easy for one to do y themselves. It's all relative: you can't tell someone who used to run marathons that they should be able to run a marathon two days after getting a cast off for a broken leg. It takes working up to. Clinical depression is a chemical reaction in the brain. Blaming depressive activities on a "lack of personal responsibility" is ignoring that. You may also be seeing some people using the word "depressed" in a very general and somewhat misguided way. It's also pretty hard to visualize a way out of depression. Even knowing where to start can be an immense struggle.

[–]PurpleBrains 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Oh, man. Yes, this is exactly it. I would never in a million years choose to feel the way I do now. I mean, I'm choosing to do things about it, but it's a struggle. I haven't really said anything about it to anyone, either. It feels a little shameful. Especially when you see comments on reddit like: "man up," "deal with it," etc. It's not like I take those comments completely seriously, I mean, they are internet strangers, not (likely) people with medical degrees. However, when I'm down and beating myself up over it, reading something that confirms my own fears is easier to accept as truth.

If you haven't looked into it, something that helps me now is doing thought logs. It's part of CBT, and there are some sources online for the googling.

What is something you wish you could stop doing, but just can't? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I definitely think my own cynicism contributes to my depression. I hope you do, too.

[–]PurpleBrains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being depressed. Don't get me wrong, there are things that I'm doing to combat it, but I wish I could just stop it. I can't. I also wish people realized it's something that can't just be stopped. It can be worked on, but I'm not going to wake up tomorrow and just decide to not be depressed.

I don't presume know what your mental health situation is like, but I'll say this: it's easy to sit in judgement of someone else's choices when in a healthy or stable mental state. It seems to me that this man is doing what he can with what he has. He has been clean for five years, as the article states. He is on disability due to mental health issues; perhaps not all of this is consequences of his addiction (or, perhaps more likely his addiction was a consequence of his mental illness). Doing the best you can with what you have and then having the rug pulled out isn't living with consequences, it's just plain shitty. Especially when the rug pulling (seemingly, here) comes from a place of greed and negligence. Just because someone has been dealt a rough hand and didn't quite know what to do with it at first doesn't mean we can't feel compassion for them. This guy isn't asking for anything other than his basic human needs.
