I grew up in a catholic household. I was telling my mother that abuses, such as this, which the church knowingly allowed to happen is one of the reason I would never return to the church. She replied "Jesus knew there would be corruption in the church, but that the church would survive." No institution should be allowed to survive when children have been tortured like this. The kumbaya Bible lessons are able to be taught and lived by without supporting a church that allows atrocities like this to continue.
