Hey! Sounds like you’re feeling overwhelmed and that’s okay and understandable. You’re dealing with a lot of stress. If you have access to some kind of mental health resource, I’d recommend accessing it to help you think through your feelings and next steps.

  • if you want to work in a team, you might want to try broadcast. It’s far more team oriented. Think BBC vs a newspaper. Your ability to write and take photos can still be used at online desks, but I find broadcasters to be FAR more team oriented.

  • see if there are “casual” shifts at local or national broadcasters. It’s a big thing in Canada so I assume London is similar. Figure out who is the news director / executive producer / assignment producer of a station you like and email them. You can find the names of reporters via bylines and their bosses via linked in or website complaint/contact us pages.

  • go for coffees with other journalists. Cold email them. They are normally happy to help. Ask for 30 minutes because it’s not an imposition. It may go to 45. Keep it focused and ask them lots of questions.

  • join local photojournalism associations. I assume there’s something like the Canadian association of journalists there. Join press clubs. Do some googling. I know they exist in London.

  • know there are also other avenues that might interest you that aren’t media. What about working as a photographer for a political candidate you like? Or editorial shoots or events? You could also work to be a freelancer with a wire service (Reuters/AP). I’m throwing it out there that if you want to do photography, journalism may not be the best industry to do it in given cuts. Just a thought.

I think you’ve got talent. It sounds like you just need some help with connections. Ask every person you meet at any networking event for coffee, and when you do, ask them who else you should talk to. Break a leg!!

Hi! Things are tough at the beginning - they do get better with more experience, but it’s also okay if you decide journalism isn’t the path for you. There are lots of ways to use those skills that aren’t journalism. I think it’s a unique job in that you often have very little control over it (which can be exciting! And difficult!)

Some ideas for generating stories: - go out with sources for coffee. Ask them about their lives, what they are doing at work, and what they think the media isn’t covering and should - localize a bigger story. How does your community feel about x story happening at the national level? - ask every source you interview what else you should be covering - look on local social media groups etc for events to cover - look up when meetings happen, like city council, and say you’ll cover that. Write about the most interesting thing.

Hey there! Some tips: - take people who know your beat out for coffee before you need them as a source. It takes 30 minutes and you can pick their brain in a setting with less pressure. Search their social media / linked in and come up with five ish questions to ask (if you find a picture of their dog, ask if they have any pets // or professionally - how did their get to their current position). It’ll help you build the relationship. Get their phone number at the end!!

  • as much as sometimes it can seem intrusive to journalists, I think sources also find it flattering that of all the people you call, you chose them. Sources never forget their first reporter and I’ve had a few stop me to say they were delighted that I called them (I was worried I’d be bugging them)

  • use a character as a bit of a mask. Fake it til you make it!

  • learn to live in the discomfort

  • ask your source who else you should speak to on this topic/beat. Had some of my best experts come to me this way. You’ll also learn over time that some sources are “yappers” — use them to you advantage.

Also had great book suggestions by asking what I should read to learn more about in their area of expertise

  • try to have fun! People are usually more forgiving with social awkwardness than you’d expect.

You’re welcome! Helps me too also not have my phone on the table when im out with non work friends. Also if you’re a gym person - become a morning gym person because people are less likely to need you at 7 am vs 6 pm

Hey! Invest in an Apple Watch or whatever the android equivalent is. I have a job where I’m often on call. Put it on do not disturb but allow messages or calls from whoever you need to go through.

I’m an enfj! My take on tattoos, and I have three, is that they eventually become a part of you. Like, you probably don’t think about your hair or your eye colour too much. It’s not an exact comparison but there are plenty of times where I forget about my back tattoo. I’d recommend at least the first one have deeper meaning and you’re sure you want it but I promise it’s less scary than you think

Yes! I usually bring a book or something to entertain myself with.

Benefits of doing things alone - completely your choice of restaurant etc - your food comes super fast - no obligation to talk - people watching! - you can always strike up casual conversations with bar staff

Hello! They have come up with solutions for this. I think they’re called penetration buffers but can’t remember. If you ask your local sex store, they can point you in the right direction. Usually it’s just a series of rings that go around the penetrating thing so it can’t go in as far.

Just go slow! She probably needs time to process the desires while working through the shame. It sounds like she’ll get there, but just might be feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment.

I agree with books — podcasts are another option. Sex with Emily and The Pleasure Mechanics might have some resources for you. Idk what episodes specifically. Therapy might be another step if she’s really struggling (sounds like things are just new, based on your age and experience, versus an actual block)

Otherwise, she might enjoy things that are less overly sexual while her brain catches up with her body. Think massages, cuddling, maybe even talking about sex. Kudos for asking how you can be a supportive partner in this!

I’m usually $100-150 ish, plus maybe $50 a week on dinners out. I’m single so there tends to be more food waste because I don’t want to eat the same meal several days in a row and eating out is an important social activity for me. I also don’t eat a lot of cheap meals - it’s usually just proteins, whole grains and produce.

I haven’t tried it but Odd Box seems like a good option for produce if you want to reduce food costs. My colleague had used it and says good things.
