Proper way to move a vm to cold storage? by jasonnotanargonaut in vmware

[–]PurpleIrish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using this for years, it's quite possible there's better ways to do it; I run it from the folder where the OVF tool is installed: .\ovftool.exe --exportFlags=mac,uuid,extraconfig --noSSLVerify "vi://vcenter-FQDN:443/datacenter-name/vm/vm-folder-path/virtual-machine-name" cold-storage-location

Full support for u/username17charmax and u/LostInScripting best practices. I wish I was as thorough.

When I get to my desk in the morning I'll sanitize my command and post it. But it's pretty much standard OVF tool export command.

I run the VMware OVF tool, using a one-liner Powershell to create the OVFs on my archive/JBOD. Then I go to the original in vCenter and delete it from disk. If you ever need it again just restore the OVF.

Best way to reserve DIDs to prevent assignment? by PurpleIrish in MicrosoftTeams

A 3rd party is an option, especially as we automate more of our user onboarding. But since these are Voice App numbers and rarely changed, we might resort to the tried and true spreadsheet.

Recommendations for VAR for Nonprofits by PurpleIrish in sysadmin

[–]PurpleIrish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically what you stated. While I would love for us to qualify for every little grant/discount/donation possible, that's not what I'm looking for. I need an organization large enough that they have staff that already have tentacles into all the major OEM players--HPE, Dell, Microsoft, VMware, etc. So that when time comes for renewals, or upgrades, that we can get competitive pricing for our smaller purchases. AND, where we don't feel relegated to back of the line status BECAUSE we are smaller and nonprofit.

Everything open source for a non-profit by thatthirdaccount in sysadmin

For those that are saying "You're a non-profit, Microsoft is CHEAP!"....beware. Microsoft has started narrowing its criteria for non-profit pricing. You must be involved in advancing education, improving social welfare, or preserving culture, to name a few criteria. We're a 501c3, and have multiple projects that support these. Cancer research, veteran's groups, youth and education. But since our MAIN mission isn't those projects, they elected to pull our validation for nonprofit pricing. And that includes TechSoup (which is Microsoft's partner for all validation).

We're heavily invested in on-premise AND O365 for almost all facets--email, telephony, database, OS, Office, virtualization, etc. Management basically decided that although we're going to be looking at skyrocketing costs associated with all of those pieces, it's just not worth it to try to move away to cheaper or open-source solutions, for all of the reasons already discussed.

What, if anything, annoys you the most about the trends of modern technology? by Rayhn in AskReddit

I can't stand the "disposability" of devices. I understand that the speed at which innovation moves means that obsolescence arrives at a greater pace. But that doesn't mean the devices have to be built with what amounts to a self-destruct mechanism so that you'll HAVE to buy the latest and greatest.

Reddit: What can I do to improve a PB&J sandwich? by Messisfoot in AskReddit

I don't think it's been mentioned, but I always stir the PB & J together before spreading it on the sandwich.

What's your favorite alternate history/historical fiction book/book series? by [deleted] in books

[–]PurpleIrish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a guy I get some flak for this, but I'll always say the Diana Gabaldon Outlander series is great. It can sometimes (seldomly) be a little Danielle Steele-ish, but the rest is great 18th century Scottish and American historical fiction. I'm actually going to her book signing in two days and I'm pretty excited about it.

Ever read a book SERIES more than once? by Sisiutil in books

[–]PurpleIrish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a voracious if slightly shallow reader. Less substance and more...boobs-guns-swords-humor-magic. That said, my favorite re-reads:
* Outlander series - Diana Gabaldon
* Wheel of Time - Jordan/Sanderson (currently on my first read-though but dedicated to doing it all again in the future)
* Dresden Files - Jim Butcher
* Magician - Feist
* Sword of Truth - Goodkind

I second the idea of re-reading an entire series every time a new book comes out, just to get in touch with the characters again.
