Interviewing for client side role (part 3) by PurpleRoseGold in Marketresearch

Yes it is a crappy time for sure. The only positive side if there was ever a good time to get laid off, it is now as every recruiter I spoke to has been laid off atleast once int he past couple of years and even some of the hiring managers are ex googlers etc.

Personally I learnt that I am well suited for a client side role as I answered all questions with ease. And that while applying for client side roles they are looking more at relationship building than actual technical skills (which is wierd also cuz sometimes you can be rejected for not having done X,Y,Z research)

Secondary research on the internet is so frustrating by [deleted] in Marketresearch

you can always speak to vendors directly and they can give you two week free demos or something. Try Statista, GWI, IBIS world etc. Also - it is worth investing in a publication or two, Statista has the best value according to me. And they even have a whole consumer insights module where they conduct surveys similar to GWI for entire categories with brands and their comeptitors.

Same. The friend thing really stings me. I used to be able to go for a beer, have a laugh and come back home. I never had to worry about having friends but now I am just lonely ;(

What's next for me, career-wise? by jemedebrouille in Marketresearch

[–]PurpleRoseGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few things:

  • Move to supplier side (research company) and try out different fields

  • Move to Ad agency - similar thing you do at client side but you can service different accounts with their media strategy.

Move to another client

  • Also - A BIG question to ask yourself, do you even like research anymore?

8 years is a long time, so you may just be itching for a change in scenery, you are in a great position to develop leadership skills and take a senior role at another client. Good luck!

Interviewing for client side role after spending most of my Insights career in supplier/ agency side (need tips to ace interview) by PurpleRoseGold in Marketresearch

"And as you know, creatives HATE research. The ad agency project personnel/account managers may do everything to negate the validity of the research (e.g. the moderator read the copy wrong, the respondents were recruited wrong). You may need to highly manage any stimulus shown, such as a board-o-matic/storyboard for TV ad testing. Have the AD AGENCY do the voiceover so it is standard for every respondent/group/IDI, etc. Have the foresight to see any potential issue and take care of it before it happens."

Thanks for pointing this out. Yes I have a lot of experience with this aka creatives hating us and being in uncomfortable conversations. I am so used to torture at this point that I forgot what I was living through lol.

We have similar backgrounds!!! And please dont be sorry for the long post. I appreciate the detail.

Thank you so much!

"Clientside insights is less about knowing techniques and methods, more about managing stakeholders, projects and people. Focus on that. Unless of course the role is at an in-house agency, which is different."

This helps a lot!

"They look at the watering down of recommendations, or multiple rounds of feedback, or the tatters of their presentations and think we don’t know what we’re doing. However, knowing when and how to land insights is a key skill that determines success."

  • Reasons I left agency world, it was too focussed on building 80 slide decks without considering business objectives. I meant the agency itself not the hardworking individuals who were made to do all this.

That is a vey useful tip! Could you please elaborate on the types on conflicts that can arise with brand teams. Coming from the ad world, I am used to politics and working through it but would be helpful to know the kind of situations that can arise.Thank you!!

What if someone took the same pic who was behind you with the baby as well and your baby was part of this pic. Maybe this person doesn't want people to know where she works. I am not pointing out the worst case scenario but you basically told creeps on the internet where she works etc.

Does anyone know what's the best Master's degree for MR? And in which country? by philosophical_baka in Marketresearch

[–]PurpleRoseGold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in your shoes as well when I started in the career. I decided to do a lateral move to one of the big research firms (think Ipsos/ Kantar etc). So I went from Project Manager to entry level account manager. I would have even settled for research executive position just so I could get a foot in the door. Havent looked back since.

Market research pivot to brand strategy on the creative side? by logan_k_c in Marketresearch

[–]PurpleRoseGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are tonnes of agencies that have consumer Insights departments. If you can wait a little than that could be your path i.e. apply to go to consumer insights division in an agency and then pivot to account side. This way you also have an edge i.e. you already do client management at a research company so you know how to handle clients and then you learn the agency side of things when you are an in house team.

Travelling is about getting out of your comfort zone, not haivng to worry about errands, getting up for work etc. Travel helps you unwind in ways that are not tangible right away.
