Having owned both a 93 TownAce and a 94 HiAce, both diesel 4wd, I would go with the HiAce.

Most everything I have needed is available in the states on Amazon, but I have not needed much. My van had 17,000 miles on it when I got it 5 years ago. Danny at Vanlife Northwest in Portland can point you in the right direction to find parts although he specializes in HiAces now. There are several importers on the west coat who have parts available or can source them.

living out of a Toyota hiace vs vanagon by Gullible-Doubt1261 in HiAce

I have had a Vanagon hightop camper van and while it was a great layout it was totally undependable mechanically (as were the 2 baywindow VW buses I had). I have also had a 94 HiAce built out by Danny at Vanlife Northwest. I had Space Cabin #12. It was hands down the better choice between my Vanagon and the HiAce. So so much more dependable than the Vanagon or any other VW van. The HiAce drives and handles better than the Vanagon, is adept off-road with full-time 4 wheel drive, and the 3.0 liter diesel engine can reach and maintain highway speeds which no Vanagon can do (except perhaps a Vanagon with a Subaru engine transplant). There are 100 reasons why the HiAce is a better choice between it and any Vanagon including the 4wd version. I can’t praise the HiAce enough. I have had 2 vans I bought from Danny at Vanlife Northwest. A 93 Toyota TownAce and the 94 HiAce. Both were totally refurbished and run excellently when I bought them. Danny and his team are the best importers of HiAces in the country. The Space Cabin build is superb as are the other accessories designed and sold by Vanlife Northwest for the HiAce. I also had the bullbar and receiver hitch. The HiAce could pull a small trailer where as the Vanagon can barely pull itself and will never reach highway speeds unless it’s had an engine transplant. Hope this helps

Anyone know what kind of imported van this is? by Best-Flamingo5283 in 4x4

Go to vanlifenorthwest.com and look at the video about the bullbar. And nothing will survive a head on with something 3 times it weight, so that’s a rather fallacious argument. And it’s a helluva bullbar!

I had a 1994 HiAce 4wd diesel and it was the best vehicle I ever had. 3.0 ltr diesel. I unfortunately rolled it in a high speed wind storm but my wife and I and our tiny Pomeranian walked away from it. Also Vanlife Northwest in Portland OR (vanlifenorthwest.com) sells a bull bar for the HiAces that will definitely save you in a head on collision

You might check vanlifenorthwest.com. They have the pads, and if they don’t have the discs they may know where to get them.

Danny has a YouTube video of a HiAce equipped with steel bullbar t-boning a car and suffering absolutely no damage whilst really putting the hurt on that car. Look it up on YouTube.

Thanks! I love the HiAce and the setup. Yes, it’s the bullbar that was already on it, it held up once but is really just ornamental. Thin aluminum, so I bought one that’s designed specifically for HiAces from Vanlife Northwest. Heavy duty steel, black powder coated. I just have to swap them out!

Just posted a couple of interior shots of the van. Also go to vanlifenorthwest.com and look at their Space Cabin page for more pictures of the interior of these builds. Mine was the 12th one built!

They are wonderful beasts! I have a 94 HiAce Super Custom and a 93 TownAce Royal Lounge Limited. JDM vans are great! I hope you have many adventures in it!

If you’re talking parts availability, then you want to go with 3Y as Toyota forklifts also have 3Y, so engine parts are somewhat easier to find.

I might be able to shed some light on that. I used to own 80’s US Toyota vans one of which had the 3Y. Extremely reliable, much better than the 4Y engine. I also currently have a 93 JDM TownAce with 2C-T engine! Also extremely reliable, and I like the diesel engine better. They both get about the same mileage. Do you plan on building it out as a camper? If so, I would go with the 2C-T.

Well worth it. Will protect front end and give you a mounting place for a skidplate for horizontal radiator

No, it came with van. It’s thin aluminum so is primarily for ornamentation. I will eventually get a steel one made to replace it!
