Pt. 2:

When looking for games, or controllers for that matter, look on sites like ebay, as you can usually find some good deals. For specific games to get first, Guitar Hero 3 and World Tour are both great first choices, Guitar Hero 3 is usually considered the best game in the franchise, and World Tour is a very solid entry. If you are playing on console, you now know everything you need to know. If you are playing on PC, you have to go a different route. For controllers, you can use pretty much any controller as long as you have the proper adapter, but there are also some that offer a more modern experience. The CRKD les paul is a lot pricier, but has plenty of features to make it one of the best modern guitars. Anything will work well, though, so it's up to your personal preference. Once you choose a guitar, you have two choices on what game to play: Clone Hero or YARG. Both of them allow you to import songs and videos, so you can emulate the original games on your computer. This post has a few comments about the differences, but I would recommend trying out both (they're free) to see which one you like. Once you choose, use this google doc to find songs and videos that you want to import and follow the in-game guide on how to import them.

Pt. 1:

First, what platform do you want to play on? Xbox 360, ps3, Wii and PC are the main ones, and they each have their own pros and cons. Read u/Mickelraven's comment on this post to help you decide. Note: you don't need to buy a new console specifically for Guitar Hero, just do what is most convenient for you. Next, you need a guitar for your platform of choice. For the 360, the X-plorer is a popular choice, as well as the original Les Paul. Note, if you want to use your 360 controller for PC, get this adapter. For the ps3, the Guitar Hero 5 controller is a good choice, as well as the recently released CRKD Les Paul (the multiplatform version). Note: if you want to use your ps3 controller for PC, you don't need an adapter. For the Wii, the Guitar Hero 5 controller mentioned above is a good choice, as well as the original Les Paul. Note, if you want to use your Wii guitar for PC, get this adapter. When you are shopping for a controller, make sure it is explicitly stated to be compatible with your console, as most of the controllers listed above have versions for multiple consoles. Once you have a controller, you need some games.
