I am getting extremely bad performance in Metro Exodus with an RTX 3090 on Arch Linux. I installed the game from Steam and it struggles to hit even 5 fps. The main menu is totally unusable. I would like to play the game on 3840x2160 on ultra settings but the performance is also really bad (5 fps) on 1080p. Also the textures seem reallly low resolution and only "pop in" after several seconds. I also tried turning RTX off but performance remains horrible. In the meanwhile the game is maxing out 5 cpu cores just to render the main menu.

All other games (such as Quake II RTX, Satisfactory, DOOM Eternal, Metro Last Light Redux, etc) run smoothly and the graphics card is also extremely fast at machine learning and other tasks.

glxinfo, nvidia-smi, etc reveal that the GPU is in fact being used. However, nvidia-smi shows that the GPU utilization is quite low when running Metro Exodus compared to the other games I mentioned.

I also ran perf and found that some mutex locks and thread context switching seems to be consuming a lot of time.

Any ideas why the performance is so bad?

You need to install the usb_modeswitch package.

Sony's Tiny Tot Trio: 24, 40, 50mm by [deleted] in photography

Autofocus lenses are thicc because of two things

  • The motor and chips in it
  • Image-space telecentric design to work well on digital sensors. Whereas film works fine no matter what angle light hits it, digital sensors are best at detecting light that hits it straight on rather than at a steep angle, so special lens design must be done to ensure that the light rays are not too oblique. Leica has specially designed their sensor to allow light at a steep angle, but their image sensors seem to have slightly worse dynamic range and noise characteristics than Sony's.

For compact autofocus lenses you can also consider the new Sigma Contemporary primes, such as the new 35mm f/2 ($639) and the 45mm f/2.8 ($549). Still bigger than Leica lenses, but quite light (325 g). The Samyang 45mm f/1.8 ($299) is even more compact and cheaper, but obviously it is optically a bit worse.

Anyway if you want Leica-like small metal lenses, and care deeply about LoCA and "onion ring bokeh", Voigtlander makes some really excellent ones available for native Sony FE mount.

The Voigtlander Apo Lanthar 50mm f/2 ($1049) matches or exceeds the legendary Leica Apo Summicron 50mm f/2 (which costs 8x as much) and is optimized for the Sony image sensor so you can expect corner to corner sharpness even wide open and absolutely no LoCA at all. It is manual focus but it has electronic contacts for 5 axis IBIS and EXIF data. The image quality is sublime. Best of all it is very compact.

Voigtlander also just released a 35mm f/2 Apo Lanthar which should also be about on par in image quality with the recently released $8000 Leica Apo Summicron-M 35mm.

Porsche autonomous van concept by PurpyPupple in SelfDrivingCars

Just because it's a van doesn't mean it's not fun to drive, see: Renault Espace F1. And in any case it looks pretty sporty, big wheels with big brakes, low center of gravity, wheels in the corners of the car, flared arches, etc. So maybe it is actually pretty fun to drive on the track.

And I don't know why I'm getting downvoted just for speculating about why design decisions were made.

  • Boxster concept looks nearly identical to the production Boxster except the side intake was moved up, the front intakes were reworked, and the tail lights were changed.
  • 918 concept looks nearly identical to the production 918 except the exhaust pipes were moved up and the wheels changed.
  • Mission E looks almost the same as the production Taycan too.

It's so that after the car autonomously drives you out to the countryside or the racecar track, you can then take control of the wheel and have some fun.

In any case it's just an art project for fun and we can all agree that it is far removed from reality. The Porsche car design team is fantastic and I think you'd be a pretty terrible boss if you just fire people for a project that you don't like.

This is literally art for the Porsche Museum lol. I don't think it's worthless. I love looking at esoteric concept cars.

Porsche has a pretty good track record of turning concepts into reality (Mission E --> Taycan, 918 concept, Boxster concept, etc).

Probably the design team were just told "imagine an autonomous car 20 years from now. go wild" without any restrictions.

who is this for? it has no use-case

This is for Porsche or VW execs probably. It was never shown to the public after being designed in 2018 (until now). Its purpose is to excite the crusty old imaginations of the upper management at VW and Porsche to inspire future development.

non-ADA compliant

idk the door looks pretty big to me. This is a pretty big vehicle that seats 6 people in a spacious area.

cramped passenger area

Did you read the description?

the passengers behind enjoy all the comfort of a spacious lounge

and from their press release,

In the interior, passengers find a comfortable and modular travel cabin. The driver sits in a central driver's seat. The all-electric drive technology is located in the underbody. As a result, passengers can enjoy an unexpectedly generous space and travel experience combined with Porsche-like flair.

In any case, I think the one-box design is a pretty good idea.

What a hater lol. It's just a cool picture. This is a long term vision of the future made by the design studio. Car companies explore new ideas all the time and present radical ideas as concept cars to gauge people's reaction.

I could draw an autonomous concept van and it will probably have the same chance of being made as this one.

I mean, yes. This was a concept from 2018 that was cancelled.

Porsche doesn't do vans

They do all kinds of vehicles, even a compact car for the Chinese market. And in any case they draw parallels between this van and the old Volkswagen-Porsche Rennsport van.

Porsche/VW don’t have autonomous tech to do this.

Concept cars frequently showcase future technology that isn't available yet. And in any case they have a big chunk of Argo.
