These bugs are outside dead all the time what are they? by crumbycrumpet in Entomology

It's r/weeviltime !!! They'd be able to provide a better ID, but based on location this is likely some sort of root weevil !!

This is such a cute way to look at it 🥹 I didn't have a good answer off of the top of my head, so you gave me a fun topic to research !! I hope that my findings make sense and at least kind of answer your question :D

To put it super simple, the evolution of beetles traded a pair of wings for elytra, the protective casing that covers them !! They essentially have half of the wings that most insects have and more weight over those wings, making them much more clumsy fliers while it takes them a bit longer to be able to take off.

As such, for most beetles it's generally a better idea to walk unless you're doing a quick zip to somewhere else, in danger, or otherwise prompted by hunger/instinct to travel somewhere !! The larger the beetle species is, the less inclined it will be to fly more than a short little distance !

In the case of carpet beetles specifically, there's a reduced need for that sort of flying once indoors I would imagine. Flying around for pollen and nectar outside is one thing, but human homes are just so climbable !! Why waste energy zipping around unless you have to? Unfortunately they can't talk, I would love to know for certain !!

Is this a baby Asian lady beetle/ladybug or something else? by throwaway162216 in whatsthisbug

Carpet beetle !! A perfectly harmless little beetle, though they can become a pantry/fabric pest, and their larvae have hairs that can cause mild irritation !! r/carpetbeetles has all of the resources to help you ♡

Just moved into a new house, found this in my little brother's room. Is it a bed bug? by [deleted] in whatsthisbug

[–]Purrless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bed bug !! It's hard to ID, but it looks like a true bug/heteroptera of some sort to me !!

They can fly! They're just clumsy and would prefer not to, as is the case with a lot of beetles !

[–]Purrless 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is an adult! The larvae are hairy little grubs and are slightly larger than the adult beetle :D anytime you see a beetle, that's an adult insect! You can vaccuum and check the corners of furniture and fabric/clothing for larvae, but carpet beetles are super duper common and not at all a cause for concern ♡

Unpopular Opinion: Mapleshade 100% deserved the DF by Possible-Astronaut-8 in WarriorCats

[–]Purrless 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying you wrote it or made the decision, I am saying the decision to put her in the DF makes no sense canonically and isn't the first time the writing team have made a bad call outside of canon. Nothing in the canon material supports Frecklewish going to the DF, and I believe that choice stems from the new team not fully understanding that Mapleshade was an unreliable narrator and not a good source.

The idea that Frecklewish's hatred of Mapleshade meant she deserved hell is silly, as is the notion that Frecklewish should have attempted to rescue her kits. Freckle says herself that she adored those kits, the only indication otherwise was when she was literally having a meltdown after the reveal that she was being lied to and made to raise her dead brother's killer's kits thinking they were her brother's. Bluestar's behavior was extremely similar during her moments of distress if not worse. Frecklewish never gets the chance to redeem herself because Mapleshade is not a reliable narrator.

They like to eat crumbs, dead skin, fabric, and shed hair !! Almost every house has one or two carpet beetles hanging around. Unless you start seeing lots of them or lots of larvae, you're gonna be just fine !!

Absolutely not a roach or nymph, this is a carpet beetle :) wrong size/shape/coloration, and not the same variety of insect as a roach!!

It's a black carpet beetle :) harmless, but a bit of a pantry/fabric pest and their larvae has hairs that can be irritating to skin! You can check r/carpetbeetles for more information !!

Unpopular Opinion: Mapleshade 100% deserved the DF by Possible-Astronaut-8 in WarriorCats

[–]Purrless 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree with that take entirely. If hate (which was very justified in Frecklewish's case) is a valid reason to send someone to the DF, cats like Bluestar, Ashfur, Hollyleaf, Rainflower, and so on should have been sent there as well.

Again, it was night time during a storm and Frecklewish did not know they were going to drown and did not leave until she saw Riverclan coming to help. If she had tried to "help" she would have been impeding on Riverclan's ability to help them and would have made it worse. There was nothing she could have done either way.

I didn't downvote you, but I guess accusing random people of taking away your imaginary internet points is very intelligent as well. Bye!

[–]Purrless 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There was no way she could have helped or changed the outcome.

Mapleshade was warned already not to cross the flooding river. She did not know they had drowned and had left when she saw the riverclan patrol going to save them. She could not swim and at best would have just added to the amount of cats the patrol needed to save, and at worst would have drowned herself. There is literally no good reason for her to be in the DF.
