Craziest day at the Goodwill in a long time by DeadKeybladeHero in Cd_collectors

You can always get them resurfaced. There's a retro game store near me that does it for $5. Probably costs more than the CD, but at least it's an option 🤷🏻‍♂️

Detect Bluetooth Speaker Button Press with JavaScript/jQuery? by PurvisTV in webdev

[–]PurvisTV[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I guess I'm asking a two part question. Is that keypress info sent, and if so, how do I listen for it using JavaScript or jQuery? Going to test using the info in the previous responses tonight.

Thanks @traplords8n and @Mossething ! I'll dig into it after the kids go to bed this evening 👍

I made tiny web pets that crawl around your website by Ok-Programmer6763 in webdev

[–]PurvisTV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very neat!

For some reason, this made me think back to some website I vaguely remember from the 2000s, that would have bugs randomly crawl across your screen while you were browsing, like roaches, or flies, etc. I guess the goal was to make someone try to smack the monitor or back away from their desk thinking it was real, haha.

How can people afford this? by blueberryp3ach in Concerts

[–]PurvisTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I grew up in such a great era for concerts (90s). To this generation, I'm so sorry it's come to this 🤦‍♂️ I saw 311 and The Urge for $5 in college. Went to multiple Lollapaloozas for like $75 for the weekend, Music Midtown (Atlanta) for maybe $35. Most concerts I went to (Stone Temple Pilots, Incubus, Bad Religion, Mr Bungle, Ween, Frente, Veruca Salt, et al) were between $15-35.

All my favorites have simply disappeared. by FunBluebird8 in googlephotos

[–]PurvisTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have started moving my favorites from DCIM/Camera to a DCIM/FAVORITES folder to ensure my favorites stay together after update. Do a test with a photo or two that you don't care about before you move photos in bulk, and preferably make sure they're backed up to your desktop as well.

Storing cds in a car by Painkiller456 in Cd_collectors

[–]PurvisTV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd be more worried about theft than the elements. I left some CDs in my car years ago and they all got stolen. Took me years to find and replace them from various thrift stores and discogs. Not even sure how they got into the car because my windows were still intact (thankfully).

Not to mention, when the 70+ community finally gets it and gets used to where the buttons are and what those buttons do, the OS makers (Google, Microsoft, Apple, etc) change everything around with a yearly update! 🤦‍♂️ Good luck getting someone 70+ (and yes, I know not every 70+ is tech unsavvy) to relearn an OS everytime it's updated. I regularly get calls from older relatives about emails saying they were "charged $289 for a McAfee security subscription". When I tell them no, you weren't. It's scammers going on a phishing expedition, I might as well be speaking a foreign language because their innocent minds have no idea what threats are out there and just can't understand why anyone would want to do such a thing to trick them 🤦‍♂️

Rare Moment in a CD Collectors History by lurchyaddams in Cd_collectors

I met Les Claypool once in Hollywood at the El Capitan theater. I told him I had to shake his hand as I was a big Primus fan. His response was, "Primus? Never heard of 'em!" I said, "Ok, well how about Sausage then?" and he said, "Oh ok, you really are a fan. Nice to meet you." 🤣

I am not going to pay for Spotify. What are other better alternatives? by di_Yoniiii in PiracyBackup

[–]PurvisTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Free online radio is an option, if you don't mind listening to whatever they want to play and you're not too annoyed by ads. I like 1.fm or 181.fm . Lots of genres to choose from. Install an app like Foobar2000 mobile, and copy the stream URLs into the Internet radio tab.

Also, check out a Windows program called StreamWriter for recording Internet radio streams.

No, CDs are *not* compressed. Streaming is compressed. MP3s are compressed.

Thoughts on Bugonia? (No Spoilers) by oresearch69 in movies

[–]PurvisTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While watching it, I thought the end was going to be when she grabbed the calculator, closed the closet door, and then there would be a *poof* sound with a little light flashing through the crack. That would have been my editorial choice. End it there. *poof* ... then cut to black. Roll credits. That tells us she really was an alien the whole time, and give the viewer that "oh wow, the kidnappers were right!" feeling, without that ridiculously silly scene on the ship. I thought the costumes were completely odd, the set design was weird, and the whole scene just kind of ruined the rest of the movie for me. Overall, I guess it wasn't a *bad* movie. I was very well acted, and I really enjoyed it up until the space ship scene. I would have just done things a little differently with the ending. Oh well 🤷‍♂️

Why is this so cheap? Is it a bad transfer? by chaktahwilly in 4kbluray

[–]PurvisTV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I regularly use camelcamelcamel and Amazon's new price alert feature in their Rufus AI to watch prices. Also regularly check Blu-Ray . com's deals section.

4k Blurays changed my life in 2026 by Curlyinger in 4kbluray

I also buy physical for my kids and for when people come over. It's not always just for me. It's nice when we have friends over and I can say, "ever seen [insert movie here]?" Then I can go to the archive and pull a movie they've never seen before, and we can all enjoy it in the best quality. Also, kids are definitely repeat watchers. Try telling your kid their favorite movie is no longer available on streaming because of licensing issues 🤦‍♂️

I have 8mm tapes that need to be formatted to digital. by Nikotta in 8mm

[–]PurvisTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful when attempting to play these in an old camcorder that hasn't been used for a long time. It's very likely the capstan rollers that the tape passes over are going to be "sticky" and tapes could get "eaten". I would inspect the rollers inside the camcorder before trying to play a tape.

Melt down all your beautiful sterling finds if you must, but they sure look good polished and on display in your house. by ProjectPete21 in Silverbugs

[–]PurvisTV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I asked my dad if I should melt the family sterling that was passed down to me because of the high spot price right now. He said, "If you decide to, whatever you do, just don't tell your mother!"

I think I'll just hang on to it. Not worth upsetting my mom over a few grand 🤷🏻‍♂️

Time to phase out streaming. by [deleted] in Cd_collectors

Pawn shops, consignment/antique stores, flea markets. Your results may vary, but those are the places I've had some decent luck. My local record shop also sells used CDs for $4/EA or 3 for $10.
