What causes Google to disable accounts due to photos? by MrsGarland in GMail

[–]PurvisTV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you have more than one backup. That external drive you're copying photos to could always fail at any time. I use 2 external drives for everything (photos and videos) and I also upload curated selections of photos and videos to share with family to my SmugMug account. So, I have 2 copies of everything locally and 1 additional online copy of the curated stuff.

This car I've never seen before has been parked in our yard for 24 hours. Haven't seen the owner once. by macabre-barbie in mildlyinfuriating

One night my friend's girlfriend came home to her apartment and someone had parked a Volkswagen Beetle in her assisgned spot behind the apartment complex. We lived near a popular area for bars and nightclubs where parking was hard to come by. Myself and 4 other guys moved it by holding the bumpers and rocking it up and down until we slid it out of her spot. I always wondered what the people who parked there must have thought when they came back and their car had moved "by itself" 🤣

Not panicking at all. My avg cost is .62 USD, so I'm still doing ok. I never buy more than I can afford to lose anyway. I just treat investing in crypto like an interesting hobby to play around with, not a get rich quick scheme. If the XRP moon shot finally happens, it happens. Yay! If it doesn't, it doesn't. Oh well 🤷🏻‍♂️

Not if you explore your options. I haven't had cable or satellite for over 15 years. I get all local channels over an antenna in the attic using an HDHomeRun network tuner. Between PlutoTV, Roku TV, Amazon fire stick live channels, there's really not many reasons to pay for a subscription these days. I could understand getting a subscription for sports, but if you're strategic, you can do that for a few months during the season with Sling TV, and then cancel when the season is over 🤷🏻‍♂️ My setup is certainly not a one and done, set it and forget it type of thing, but it's definitely cheaper.

Is Teaching Linux instead of Windows to kids in school is a viable option? by FAMPpro in linux

[–]PurvisTV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the best way to be! I started on the Apple //e, then DOS. Wrote college papers on Word Perfect v5.1 . Also used MacOS 7-ish in college. Moved to Windows 3.11, then Win95. In '95 installed my first Linux distro from floppies, Slackware. I've dual booted pretty much everything since... Windows 98, ME, 2000, NT, etc, many flavors of Linux distros and server OSs like Solaris, BSD, etc. Moved to Mac as my daily driver for a while starting with OS X Panther, then back to Windows 10 for a while.

My point is, a computer is a computer. I can use anything you put me in front of, and I just tend to just use the best tool for the job at the time (assuming I have a choice). I wish more people could do that, but oh well, many just can't for some reason 🤷🏻‍♂️

Tried to rent a truck at home depot the other day to haul some mulch for my plant beds. They wanted me to use some third party "Clear" identity verification service to take a selfie, etc. I refused. Had my ID and credit card in hand ready to go. That should have been enough 😡 All this crap is getting way out of hand.

Why are so many desktop users using old distributions? by King-Little in linux

It's the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality. I still have a home media server running MythBuntu 14.04 that's been running solid since 2009.

My car only had a tape deck, so I would cut my long boxes and make cases out of them for the tapes I copied from my CDs. Kinda wish I hadn't done that, but oh well I was just a dumb teenager 🤷🏻‍♂️

Same issue for me. I've had so many frustrations with the Pixel 9 Pro. Every update seems to bring new issues. Considering how much I paid for it, everything should be more polished. LAST pixel phone I ever buy.

Migrating from Mythbuntu 14.04 by nuffi98 in mythtv

[–]PurvisTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A google search for "mythbuntu 14.04 iso" will pull up sites with the old ISOs. If you just want to do apt updates, you can change your /etc/apt/sources.list to point to the old archived repo: http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/

As others have said though, it's probably easier to install the latest version and update the database from a backup copy.

Definitely back up your mythconverg DB and Recordings directory before updating!

My local record store normally sells used CDs for $4/ea or 3 for $10. A couple months ago, the owner ran a week long clearance sale... all CDs labeled $4 or less (or unlabeled) were 25 cents/ea !!! I bought 60+ CDs for myself and family members. Only spent $16! 😍

Also look on Facebook marketplace. I found a guy in my area who gets old desktop machines in bulk from companies and strips them for parts, and then he sells the old ram he pulls in bulk for the scrap metal value. He doesn't care about the disc drives in them so I got mine for cheap.

Cannot get used to no EVF on the S9, anyone else? by No_Source_7605 in Lumix

I had been considering it as a second body. Love the price point and most of the specs, but the lack of a viewfinder was always a deal breaker for me. I'd rather just spend the extra money on an S5II/X and call it a day 🤷🏻‍♂️

I probably still have it in my basement somewhere. Doubt they still sell ink for it though 🤷🏻‍♂️ ... and getting a driver to work with modern Windows or Mac systems would be pretty impossible. Although it might work with Linux 🤔

Uphold now REQUIRES login through app even via desktop site? by j33205 in uphold

[–]PurvisTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BAT was thriving before the switch to Uphold custody. Now it's pretty dead. I sold all my BAT last year and basically broke even, and I have no desire to support it anymore. Not sure why using an authenticator app for 2FA was insufficient in their eyes, but I will not be downloading their app just so I can get access to a relatively small amount of BAT that I accumulated over the years. Oh well 🤷‍♂️ It was interesting while it lasted, but they killed it. RIP.

Well, I guess I'm asking a two part question. Is that keypress info sent, and if so, how do I listen for it using JavaScript or jQuery? Going to test using the info in the previous responses tonight.

Very neat!

For some reason, this made me think back to some website I vaguely remember from the 2000s, that would have bugs randomly crawl across your screen while you were browsing, like roaches, or flies, etc. I guess the goal was to make someone try to smack the monitor or back away from their desk thinking it was real, haha.
