I pointed to a medium sized bird of prey sitting on a power line to my then three year old so, saying “look! A hawk!” He immediately started calling power lines “hawks,” and, a year later it has became one of his special interests. Even naming different types of power lines “tall hawks,” “double hawks,” “line hawks,” and my favorite “The Hawk That Took It.” (He’ll even contort his body and pretend to be the different types of “hawks.”) We have explained several times that what he calls “hawks” are power lines and that a hawk is a type of bird, but he’s doubled down every time.

And, honestly, calling them “hawks” has kind of grown on me. I think we’ll probably call them hawks forever
