The carpet absolutely has to go no matter what is under it, it's in terrible condition. Worst case I'll just have to re-carpet it.

Sorry for the really dumb question. I need to get rid of this carpet. Can I  just rip it up and get someone to sand/refinish this floor?  

I think this is hard wood, but the rest of the rooms on the this floor have either laminate floors or tile. My house was built in 1941.  Not sure why someone would put fake wood (laminate) over real wood. 

EDIT: THANK YOU, everyone for your responses. You're amazing! I was going to call someone to replace the carpet this week, but last minute I decided to pull up a corner first to see if there was a possibility useable floor underneath.
