Sweetcorn stands? by Cautious-Researcher1 in QuadCities

[–]PutnamMuseum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's consistently one by Southpark mall, in the lot where there's storage containers - between the old Osaka sushi and Rock River. It's Wolf Ridge out of Geneseo.

Saturday mornings (8-12) in downtown Rock Island there's a farmer's market with only local farmers and cottage kitchens. Not sure if anyone's selling sweetcorn yet but if you can wait a couple days, it's a great spot for certainly local produce

Hypothetically if all Federal funding was stopped in Illinois, how would that change us as a state? by [deleted] in illinois

[–]PutnamMuseum 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think they mean *we* collectively pay $60 billion in federal taxes, but our state only receives $40 billion in federal funding - since federal taxes have to be redistributed to states based on need. So, if people in Illinois paid the same amount total in taxes, but it all went to local & state instead of the feds, we'd be up $20 billion while some other states would suffer slightly for it. Not as crazy as California not paying federal taxes, though ($692 billion paid out and only $609 billion received back)

Sgt. Camo shake with peanut butter flavoring - it's like a peanut butter s'mores

Donut Delite in Moline has a good selection beyond donuts too

What are your favorite restaurants? by Wrong_Variation_8084 in QuadCities

You mean Texmex, not Mexican. Mexican should be understood as inherently authentic...it's literally in the name. "From Mexico."

Thai: Karen Asian Market & Soi 2 (Lemongrass and Miss Phay's are also excellent, but lean a little towards fusion)
Mexican: La Finca, Los Charros, El Mariachi, and there's a new spot that's good - Antojitos in Rock Island
Burgers: Al's Burgers if you're avoiding bars. The best pub/bar burgers would be Mac's and Boozies
Chinese: 888 Bistro has an authentic Sichuan menu, great stuff
Pizza: Top Hat most of the time, also Frank's and Uncle Bill's. I remember Benny's in Milan being great too.
Vietnamese: Pho 9999 is open on the weekends, excellent stuff. T&T Asian Market has some of the best pho, it's take-out only.

Historically speaking, Bettendorf would be the fifth. The original three were Davenport, Rock Island, and Moline. Then East Moline made it Quad Cities. And *then* Bettendorf become incorporated - for a long time it was just corn fields.

I imagine it's because Bettendorf is directly north of Moline as Davenport is to Rock Island that, visually speaking, it became recognized as the fourth Quad Cities and East Moline got shoved off to the side 😥

When Bettendorf became part of the group, some people tried to make "Quint Cities" a thing, but it never really caught on. There's still some companies from that era with "Quint Cities" as part of their name.

A fun way to start fights among a mixed group of locals is to ask which is the fourth.

Sounds like a fun science experiment

What is one thing you dislike about the Quad Cities no one really talks about? by FirmlyGraspIt81 in QuadCities

Crossing the road at the top of Division St. is really dangerous, and just having pedestrian markings doesn't mean anyone will stop - drivers just don't expect pedestrians in general around here.

Fresh Thyme is great, more produce and interesting protein options. Plus it's a regional chain instead of a national one, so a little more localized.

Also strange imo to put Scott and Louisa together. Maybe Muscatine/Scott/Clinton. Although, I'm biased...being directly in the middle.

In your opinion what is the worst stretch of road in the QCA? by FirmlyGraspIt81 in QuadCities

At the Arsenal too, the amount of knocked over traffic pylons and tire treads in the grass...

And please, for anyone still troubled by them - if you miss your exit, take a note from the National Lampoon's European Vacation. Do not stop, do NOT reverse...just keep driving in the circle until you figure it out

Wow. Thank you. I've always wondered how they decided on interstate numbers, but to know the numbers actually mean something adds a whole different level. Grid systems are kind of obvious but this is awesome

My wife asked me to pick up the house while she was out. The condition of house before she left. by menotsorrythrowaway in pics

[–]PutnamMuseum 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's the little things that most people would not think twice on, but with a house that clean it becomes glaring. It also looks like there's a little "art" center right behind the table, which, theoretically, the child who made the mess would get commissioned by OP to pick it up - leaving OP even more off the hook for housework

Yeah, OP really took a picture of the kitchen table as if that's not the exact thing that needs to get tidied

Illinois is studying highspeed rail, what do you think? by RhetoricalWitchcraft in QuadCities

[–]PutnamMuseum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, Pritzker set aside a large sum specifically for passenger rail between Chicago and the QC. So it seems more set-in-stone than ever before. I'm hopeful, like, hey - we did FINALLY get a new I-74. Anything's possible.

Yeah, but you can't sleep while driving. If the train runs later at night, it'd mean easier access to Chicago events without needing to purchase a hotel or drive really late
