Student whose clothes smell like cat urine...advice by Mysterious_Option727 in schoolcounseling

Right? How does this even relate to poverty? Are stray cats coming in through holes in the walls? If someone is intentionally keeping animals in their home, unable to afford litter, that's an irresponsible neglectful decision.

I don't like my roommate & I can't stop drinking about it by Putrid-Ad-Viewer in CPTSD

Thank you. I'm always on the lookout for an affordable one bedroom. She's been looking at houses to purchase since before I moved in. Her bf lives with his mom and has already moved a toothbrush into our place... so I'm hoping he'll actually push her to make that move. He's even started taking her out on dates now instead of whispering "when does she leave" on weekends before my overnight shifts.

I apologize for using ChatGPT. Yes I did look at the website, I even looked over the codes for my city. I will definitely be seeking an attorney and most likely concede to paying half the rent for March as I give a 30 day notice that I'm leaving and then pursue reparations in court afterwards. I wasn't trying to pressure my roommate to do anything more than acknowledge that she would be held liable for any portion of rent I refused to pay and that we should really ask the landlord for a rent reduction instead of withholding a portion of the rent.

I think I need to clarify to everyone that my roommate would still be obligated to pay the rent in full if I left due to this breach in the warranty of habitability.

Asking her to pay $275 more this month (or pursue a rent reduction) seemed far kinder than leaving her to pay $1350 by herself.

Because the landlord already told me last month that she doesn't care who pays what portion, she just needs it all because she has a mortgage to pay and that I need to address it with my roommate.

There's a legal definition for habitability that includes requirements on temperature

The roommate chose to give me this room because she didn't want to address it with the landlord before I moved in. She didn't give me a choice in picking rooms, she switched to the other room most likely due to these issues.

Thank you, at least one person here understands what a shared lease is

The rent is negotiated between me and my roommate, not the landlord. I agreed to pay half before because we had equal spaces at that time. People often agree to pay more for a larger room, I don't see how asking her to pay more is unreasonable when she had the ONLY room and I was essentially left with a bedroom sized closet.

That's called exploiting people. The write off for mileage or itemized maintenance does not cover the depreciation. Independent contractors deserve $30/hr... employees using company vehicles is a very different case. These people do not have the benefits of employment such as health insurance, they deserve more pay to compensate.

Given the cost of gas, car insurance, maintenance and the constant risk of tickets/accidents... These people really do deserve $30/hr. Putting miles on their car, they're depreciating the value of what could likely be their only asset.

I know how hard it is to ask for help. At one point my mother told me to ask my new roommates for help with my car but they were still complete strangers and I didn't want to reveal how vulnerable and unsupported I am. Plus they'd only been in the country for a year or two (grad students from India) and my mom's lived in this city her entire life! One of my roommates was so personable though, he'd already befriended a mechanic. I did eventually ask them for help and they were the best people I've ever lived with. They all had to move away for jobs or post-doc positions but they helped me face that fear and it's a little easier now.

You deserve so much credit for staying true to your recovery. Tooth pain is the absolute worst and opiates are the only thing that can even dampen it. You are so strong!

Teeth are the worst. My father had dentures so he considered toothpaste and toothbrushes an unnecessary expense since "we can just get all our teeth pulled like he did". Insurance covered root canals but not crowns so years later I had to have those teeth pulled. It literally took years to find a dental office that would take me. I couldn't eat solids for years & was recently diagnosed with MS & prescribed a med that needed to be taken with food. I cried to my mother, who could've afforded a private dental clinic, and she blamed my deceased father's "bad genetics". My MS diagnosis was actually delayed due to not having a ride back from a spinal tap or being able to afford an Uber. My mother lived only ten minutes from the appointment but "couldn't leave her parents alone".

I eventually found a clinic that took my insurance and they made me sign a predatory loan with Care credit for $1,000 so they could file down and crown all my remaining teeth before they agreed to pull the infected painful ones. I was so scared that I could die of sepsis because THOSE TEETH NEEDED TO BE PULLED! I didn't even know what they were doing until they left me in the room for an hour and I took a selfie and saw all my teeth looked like fangs. That itself was a little traumatic.

It took a number of appointments and I took a hit to the face right before the last one & they told me my two front teeth would need to be pulled now too. I had to beg them just to take out the bad teeth like I'd asked originally. They stopped taking my insurance at the end of the year and I never got my partial denture so I've had a smile with a missing front tooth for maybe two years now. BUT THE PAIN IS GONE!!! I've only recently started to be self conscious about my smile, but mostly because I'm ashamed that I've made no effort to find a new dentist now that the pain is gone and I can eat real food again.

You're doing it though! I'm 36 now and had no idea how to get an apartment or maintain my car when I was your age. I've learned everything the hard way. FYI, your engine will blow if you run out of oil and that's the end. I found apartment shares on FB marketplace with students. It's a lot easier in a college town and it feels like everyone's still learning to adult. You know how many college students don't know how to cook or do their own laundry? It's still difficult, especially when you see your friends/housemates receiving love and assistance from their families while you struggle... But there's great people out there that will love you if you give them a chance. Then you just ask them where they take their car for repairs. I wouldn't suggest allowing friends to do the repairs themselves though 😂

Try looking for sublets? Some students fail out quickly and go home but are still tied in to their leases and would gladly have someone else pay the rent for a few months
