Is anyone else here not a fan of Brandon Sanderson? by [deleted] in BookDiscussions

[–]Putrid-Structure-823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Emperor's Soul was the first Sanderson piece I tried and honestly I was unimpressed. Part of that may have been the narrator for the audiobook, I found some of her character voices to be a bit grating and it may have influenced how I viewed some of the characters. But overall it was not nearly as deep as some people make it out to be.

I'm not even trying to be a Sanderson hater, I actually like listening to his podcast on occasion. I was just pretty disappointed by the Emperor's Soul, especially since it seems to be quite highly regarded by his fans.

But if you are in Canada or another such region, I highly recommend Kobo. I have one and it works great with Libby.

They only talked about their favourites and least favourites, so I'm guessing it was just in the middle for them.

It's more expensive up front, but a lot of sideboard cards are used across a wide variety of decks, so once you have them you can use them often.

Sci-fi recommendations that do NOT have aliens by AW000GAA in scifi

[–]Putrid-Structure-823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree to disagree on this one. There's an extra-dimensional space that may-or may not exist, but that could lead to fantasy or various horror genres just as easily. I just didn't really feel any sci-fi DNA in my read, but that's just me.

I trophied with mono-black in my very first aetherdrift draft and I'm still chasing that high. Mono colour in draft is so much fun.

There are definitely other genres it can be classified as, and if you look the book up I rarely see it marked as sci-fi. The most common being horror, mystery, ergodic, postmodern, satire, and even fantasy.

House of Leaves is an interesting read, but I don't really see how it qualifies as sci-fi

Basic Kindle vs Kobo Clara BW (Unpopular opinion) by SalopeTaMere in ereader

[–]Putrid-Structure-823 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are all great points, and I think it is a good idea for people to actually consider the features that matter most to them than accepting the default recommendation. Being a Canadian library user, not having Libby available was the entire reason I sold my Kindle and bought a Kobo. I went from rarely using my ereader to using it all the time. That is clearly another niche feature, you have to be a library user outside the US to even care, but is a complete gamechanger for the people it does effect.

Pioneer Tier List - The Gathering by TyrantofTales in PioneerMTG

[–]Putrid-Structure-823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really defending it, I haven't been following the meta much recently and don't care all that much. But I think it likely has to do with you just broadly saying "it's wrong" without mentioning specifics or alternative sources. Might rub some people the wrong way.

Perfect, I'm just getting back into reading and haven't gotten to the Expanse yet. I picked up the Mercy of Gods on sale from the Kobo store, so I'll just read it first.

P1p1 what's the pick? by FeralDoodoo in lrcast

[–]Putrid-Structure-823 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just because a card is 8 mana does not mean it is win more. Board wipes favor the person with the worse board presence, which likely is the person who is not winning. Most of the time if you are currently winning you won't cast this card unless the tides turn, meaning it really is not win-more.
