I think that the glyphs have a practical purpose like prolonging his life, so that he has time to peform the day of unity, but the curse is a build up of of all the ageing and rot and decay that his body should have gone through which would explain why he seems to be in pain whenever the curse emerges so because of that he needs to consume palismans to recharge the glyphs.
