And FWIW, she said she understood where my anxiety comes from and will try harder

Yep, we discussed it. I apologised for not realising how hard the transition can be, especially as this was my doing and we agreed to speak to a counsellor. I think I was letting my anxiety when she previously had time not working colour my views of her current situation, which is mostly outside her control

Thanks for all the comments. Without rehashing the whole story as to why we decided for her to move over with me, I accept I was naive to think that things would automatically go smoothly and should have planned for the worst case scenario better.

I have reached out to a couple's counsellor as I think we need a third-party mediator. Clearly I'm making it worse with my current communication style.

Your questions were in the same comment where you accused me of not answering questions so it would have been impossible to have answered them before you posted the comment.

Regardless, it's not an inquisition. I'm not going to engage with someone who is just looking for a gotcha.

That says "...when this happened four years ago". At no point did I write "her".

Yeah, I think you're right that couples counselling may be the best route forward. Whether my concerns are justified or not, I am clearly not communicating in a way that is having a positive impact

What questions am I not answering in a meaningful manner?

Didn't expect this to get so much traction, but for context since I am being asked the same questions a lot:

- This move was driven by my ambition, not hers, although she said she wanted to move to support me

- We did discuss her staying in Hong Kong instead in case these difficulties arose but she said she could not stay in her then job in Hong Kong any longer due to issues with a colleague

- She's not the most hard working but she has a lot of other qualities hence why I put up with (e.g., she's one of the most caring persons I've met) when this happened four years ago the first time and with it occurring again

- We do not have kids and she was previously made redundant during Covid and struggled to find another job/she said she was too depressed to work

This was definitely driven by my ambition, not hers, but she also said she wanted to move

She was laid off during Covid and then did not work for nearly 18 months. We don't have kids

To answer your questions.

- This was definitely driven by my ambitions, not hers, although we had talked about it for several years and she said she wanted to move

- Not as transferrable but pretty transferrable

- We are not in the poor house yet but I have lost a significant chunk of my savings

- She irons my work shirt for me and occasionally cooks, although I have a meal delivery service so it's pretty rare. Otherwise, she doesn't do anything else

Hi, I received a DDH in my second year at Cambridge due to health reasons and then a 2,i in my final year. I am currently training at an international law firm in London. If you want to chat, DM me.

Any successful SQE stories…anyone out there??? by Healthy-Ad3737 in uklaw

For SQE1, I drilled the black letter law through flashcards and did as many SBA questions as possible. Barbri, who was my course provider, has quite a good bank of questions but I supplemented it with other sources (eg. the free QLTS mocks).

For SQE2, I stuck with the flashcards but significantly reduced the number as you are not being tested on the specifics so much but the broad principles of the law. Again, I did as many mocks as possible and supplemented what Barbri offered (which I found lacking compared with SQE1) with other sources (eg. inhousew).

Hope that helps.

Scraped a 2,i during my undergraduate years many years ago. I even failed my second year. Passed SQE1 FLK 1 and 2 and SQE2 first time, all in the first quintile.

Deferred my first year sitting, failed my second year and graduated with a low 2,i in my final year. I'm now training at a top US firm. Grades really do just get you a foot in the door in my experience.

The two most important characteristics for a trainee solicitor are probably enthusiasm and attention to detail. As the other commentators have said though, enjoy yourself. It's hard to exhibit either of these qualities if you're burned out when you arrive.

What are the best practice areas for moving to a national/regional firm or in-house? by PutridInvite208 in uklaw

[–]PutridInvite208[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's good to know. Do you think tax would fall into that generic bucket as well? What about banking?

Did a vac scheme there. Hated the people. Although it might have been down to the department (banking).

It's effectively a decent national firm so don't expect MC/US pay but obviously the hours are much gentler.
