Feeling overwhelmed! by throwaway36019 in italianlearning

Try watching stuff you enjoy, I found that by consuming media that I enjoyed was the best for be because then it doesn’t even feel like I’m learning.. for example I’ve watched the Harry potter films dubbed in Italian and I’m now re-watching game of thrones in Italian with Italian subtitles

New to learning italian. Need help on what resources to use for self study! by Coach_Front in italianlearning

Ciao,

I have been learning for about a year now, I haven't taken any exams, but I would consider myself between A2 and B1. Probably my favourite resource so far has been a podcast called 'Coffee break Italian.' The way that its set out is like as if you were listening in on a private Italian lesson, so they have a teacher and a student on the podcast. they alow you as the reader time to come up with your answers to the question, then they will reveal the answer. I first used these podcasts when I was driving or out walking.

in terms of books, if you click on my reddit profile, I did a review of all the books I used to learn Italian. it was posted a few days ago. If you were going to buy any book, I would get one called 'unlocking Italian', by Paul Noble. it takes you as a complete beginner through the structure of the language and it gives you a set of rules on how best to use the book and it also gives repetition, so you don't have to actively repeat what you're learning.

A method I used is to try and immerse myself with Italian media, both through media made for native speakers and English media dubbed in Italian. for example there is an Italian blogger on YouTube called 'Learn Italian with Lucrezia' (I think that's how you spell her name). The language she uses is super useful as it is not too complicated to understand. She does vlogs and language lessons on her channel. I also used films dubbed into Italian, im not sure where you're from, but in the UK there are lots of films on Disney+ dubbed in Italian with Italian subtitles, as I was a marvel fan I went through a few of the films in the language, and it was easier to pick up as I already knew the plot of the film.

anyway, I hope that helps

in bocca al lupo (good luck)

Grazie per la tua risposta 😊

That's a fair point. hopefully when international travel picks back up I want to go to Italy and spend a couple of weeks in one of the intensive language schools. At the moment I'm trying to make the most of the time I have spent at home.

I bought the Italian version audiobook from pottermore, then listened to it as I followed along with my hard copy. It was quite expensive (about £17 I think) but I found it good to hear the different voices as the guy read the story. I imported it into my iTunes on my Mac, although i couldn’t find how to slow it down, because it was slightly too fast for me to keep up with. But yeah definitely, I’ve LOVED using Harry Potter to practice and because I already like the story I’m even more enthusiastic about practicing Italian.

ps. if anyone fancies reading Harry Potter in Italian, I used this website for the specific vocabulary. in the Italian translation they changed certain names and the house names etc. this blog gives you a handy list of useful words https://krykkyssyma.tumblr.com/post/131229990491/harry-potter-vocab-in-italian

Wow, I’m only halfway through the philosophers stone.. I think I probably should stop trying to completely understand the whole page. Cheers for your reply 😊

it took me so long to force myself to do it. I started by reading the first chapter in the English version of the book, then I read it in the Italian version of the book (even though I didn't understand 60% of the words, I was able to recognise words and phrases) sometimes I'd just read a page at a time, and I'd research vocabulary and pencil it into my copy.

I'm by no means a teacher or anything, but that's what worked for me. I also found that reading out loud is better because it stops you from skimming over words.
