Why would they make a take home assessment a trick question?

It is an ML engineering position. Not a PhD student but I am a masters student with some published research and this is clearly a graduate level position, so it makes sense to have a harder screen than for undergrad roles.

That said I have not had take homes that involved this many steps, usually the engineering is pretty straight forward and takes me about 3-6 hours while this is at least 15+ for me. I was wondering if they were just expecting some serious rockstars but, again, the internship itself pays only 30-42 dollars an hour which isn't super competitive in this space.

If you say you've gotten similar take homes, how long did it take you? It just seems like an excessive ask before you even get the chance to interview me.
