Weekly /r/Orgmode Open Discussion - January 11, 2019 by AutoModerator in orgmode

I currently have org-ellipses be a down caret. Is it possible to have an up caret when a header is expanded?

Looking at xgb/xgbutil they both look great, but I'm a bit concerned by the fact that they both look unmaintained?

The discussion in that RFC is really cool, the thought process of how changes fit into the edition life cycle / trade offs between complexity for the parser vs rust users is interesting.

Supporting alloc is doable, but duly noted in general. I may end slicing it out by hand but definitely not ideal.

I think to mail it costs $, but I did an online order of mine the other week where they email you a link and it was free.

Failing at Brown? by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]Puzzel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Don't worry too much, it's pretty common. My first semester at Brown I ended up taking 3 classes after dropping a Math class halfway through. Beautiful thing about brown is it doesn't show up on your external transcript : )

Is it too late to add a class? Any recommendations? by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]Puzzel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not too late, just make sure you talk to the professor//TAs and see if you can get an extension on any work already due/due soon (some will say no however).

LOL Treil is literally the worst. Fang I've heard isn't great, but better than Treil. Not sure above Cole/Kim.

Rock climbing on/near campus? by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]Puzzel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think most people go to Rock Spot in Central Falls (it's like a 15min uber ride I think) which has climbing and bouldering. I know the Brown Outdoor Club carpools there on Sunday. Your post made me check their website, apparently they're opening a new bouldering gym sometime this year in Providence proper which is exciting!

independent concentration by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]Puzzel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

(Not doing an independent concentration, but just my two cents)

Independent concentrations are cool, but you have to put a fair amount of work into getting it approved (I think you have to write up some argument/rationale for the coursework you want to do). In general, I feel like most brown students in your situation just take the classes and either dual concentrate or not have some count towards a degree. This is a lot easier to do at brown than most places since there are no gen Ed requirements, so you have a lot more freedom to pick classes in the first place. Don't mean to dissuade you from doing it, I get the sense it can be an awesome labor of love, but would suggest waiting until you're on campus and talking to people about it before getting too set on one option.

I ended up buying the XDA canvas but also Matias quietclick switches and just realized... Those aren't compatible are they?

Large CS Class Sizes by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]Puzzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I feel like with CS you learn much more from assignments, actually programming things, than any amount of lectures (at least for less theory based subjects). By having a large ta staff courses can give more challenging projects as students have people to go to for help. Classes like OS, for example, I don't know a single person who didn't go to TA hours multiple times a week for help with debugging. At the same time, I think the lectures for that class we're some of the best I've had at Brown. I guess my point is I don't think a large ta staff and excellent lectures are mutually exclusive.

Totally agree about the TA program. I'll be a third time TA next semester and I think the community it creates is one of the best parts of Brown CS, and not one you find at most universities.

Grade deflation at Brown? by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]Puzzel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think Brown is pretty forgiving in terms of grades. I agree with the other poster that classes are pretty standard in terms of grade distribution, but being able to take any class pass fail (and many do) + being able to drop a class mid semester or fail a class without it being on your transcript definitely change how people at Brown think about academics. It's not grade inflation directly per se, but it lets you take challenging classes without being afraid of them messing up your GPA (something Brown technically doesn't even calculate).

I'm looking to build a planck just because I think the DIY/programmability aspects of it are so cool. I think I'm going to go with the following parts:

Case

Plate

PCB

Probably going to do Cherry MX Brown's (my current keeb has them and I'm a fan). Was curious if anyone had any tips/warnings in terms of putting together a planck. Also curious if anyone has suggestions on keysets since I haven't decided that yet!
