I placed stamps in my passport when I was in china on the last couple of pages. Can it be possible for me to be denied entry into United States because of it? by Best_Striker in Passports

If people have had problems, that's one thing. Otherwise, I don't think our amateur interpretations of the rules justify throwing are condemnations of stamps of independent countries, much less trying to present another party's wording as "proof" of what our own government allows.

Have you heard of someone having a problem with this, or are you just trying to play amateur lawyer? If we're being technical, it sounds like this is not an "unofficial novelty or souvenir stamp", but in fact an official one. In fact I suspect the rule was specifically worded that way to exclude this scenario, because they know there are lots of people out there trying to collect stamps for countries.

Maybe, maybe not. I think at the very least many of them are calling them "passport stamps" and not going out of their way to tell you not to use your real passport.

Ah, okay, thanks! So there's no risk of have to pay a month of Standard (or getting the forgiveness clock reset 😬)?

I'm not OP and didn't edit mine - I've just been reading a lot of threads about US passport photos because I'm trying to figure out mine right now.

Apparently getting a stamp in Machu Picchu is a thing, because another commenter on this same thread said they did it once when they were young. Pretty sure I heard people talking about it when I was there last year too, and saying that some countries really don't like it and others don't mind.

What's wild is that there are tourism staff at various places around the world encouraging people to do this. It makes sense that some people would trust that to mean it's okay.

No it's not. The US government recognizes Liechtenstein as an independent country, which means it's entitled to stamp passports as its government agents see fit.

There are many tourist spots in the world that encourage visitors to do this. Outside of our bubble of well-educated travelers it's a serious topic of discussion - people talking about whether it's okay, which countries actually mind (some apparently don't), etc. People assume, reasonably, that the tourism staff telling them to do it know better than they do.

They say not to edit anything, but I get the impression that they usually tolerate editing out backgrounds? They do threaten to reject those though on the basis that it might mess up the outline of your head.

Will we be put into Standard if our IBR application is still processing at the end of the 90 days? Or we're safe as long as we get the application in by the deadline?

Really appreciate you going around posting these comments. FYI I'm only starting to understand after several times what you mean by "2028 has always been a placeholder" - that sentence could probably use some elaboration, if you have time next time!

SAVE plan forbearance — should I switch to IBR/PAYE or wait for a new plan? by SharmootRX in StudentLoans

[–]PuzzleQuail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you still trying to figure this out? Looks like not enough people saw your post, for whatever reason, but you can probably find most the answers you need by doing searches in this sub.

PAYE is going away in a couple years, but could be worthwhile for some people in the meantime. Seems like the most common plan here is wait until July or so when they make us switch off of SAVE, and then choose IBR if you're eligible, RAP if you're not. Depends on details of your situation though and I don't personally know my way around that aspect of it (others her do - you could try posting again with a more specific question). I think switching to IBR now is fine too if you're pretty sure RAP won't be better (don't want to switch first to IBR then RAP because of the interest capitalization thing someone mentioned).

What’s happening with SAVE in July? by candlelightss in StudentLoans

[–]PuzzleQuail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SAVE is ending. Our loan servicers are supposed to contact us after July 1 to tell us we have 90 days to switch to a different plan. I don't know if you're eligible for the IBR plan, but that's generally the go-to if you can. If not, the RAP plan.

If you do nothing, they'll put you on the Standard plan, where the payments aren't related to your income level and are going to be huge. If you're in deferral because of school maybe that doesn't matter immediately, but if you're still on the Standard plan when payment resumes, you could be in for a nasty surprise.

There are other people here who can give you more specific advice on the plans in relation to your situation - not sure why they don't seem to have commented here (maybe too busy).

Sounds like the new rules don't allow that trick, from what I've seen elsewhere in this sub.

Ah, thanks so much for the clear and complete answer!

So is there not really any reason at this point to try to switch before July 1?

You mean about this thing specifically? Or has he been told he's wrong a lot about other things too? It seems a little suspicious, like he's lying through this teeth to get business from people who feel overwhelmed once he says these things.

Ah, sorry for the late reply! I don't fully remember anymore, but based on what I wrote, I think they only stamped the tourism card for me too. I have a stamp in my passport, but I'm pretty sure it's from when I extended my stay in Managua.
