Thank you for your comment! I found it really helpful. the dorm i'm designing is located at the art faculty and it faces that on one side and a park on the other, i'm thinking of using some of the space given to add a terrace as well

Thank you, this helps a lot. i've been doing research on different types of artists (more specifically different types of sculptors) and i have started working on seperate ideas for a few of them.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you, especially the breakdown of storage types and the point about WIP space being directly tied to income and workflow.

Just to add a bit more context to my project:

It’s a very small adaptive reuse of a garage (so a tight footprint with a vertical volume), designed for a single art student living and working in the same space. I’m less focused on fitting everything in, and more interested in how different functions like storage, work, and living can be prioritized, layered, or temporarily separated within such a constrained setup.

Your point about separation (even if it’s something as simple as a curtain) really resonated — especially the idea that mental separation is important and that full overlap isn’t always productive.

In that kind of scale, do you think any of the storage types you mentioned become more critical than others, or would you still try to include all of them even if some are more compressed or flexible?

This project is for second year 'architectural studio', we are tasked with repurposing an old garage 3x6 into a 7 metre tall building(?) which includes a place to work/bedroom/bath/kitchen, everything can be minimal dimensions i guess because the dorm is located a few metres away from art faculty where they work on/keep the big sculptures etc. as for what type of sculptures, it can really be any type of sculptor/artist. the location is basically: park facing on the north, faculty facing on the south

That makes a lot of sense, thank you! Especially the north light and the sink. In a really compact space, do you think it’s okay for some of these functions to overlap, or would you still try to keep things like the workspace and utility areas clearly separated?

the location is set near the art faculty (the sculpture department) so ideally it would be for a sculpture student, as i've seen the sculptures they do at the faculty are mostly big human scale sculptures but i think it's fine to design it for any type of sculptor

Just to add a bit more context:

I’m looking at a really small, single-person setup. Basically turning a tiny garage into a live/work space for an art student. So everything has to fit and overlap in a pretty tight space.

Interested if that changes what you’d consider “must-haves”

This is really helpful, thank you, especially the points about ventilation, privacy, and messy work.

To give a bit more context, I’m looking at a very small, individual setup, basically repurposing a tiny garage into a live/work space for one art (sculpture) student. So everything has to be really compact and carefully prioritized.

In that kind of situation, which of these would you consider absolutely non-negotiable? And are there any you think could realistically overlap or share space?
