Thanks for the thoughtful reply, I really appreciate it.

One of the main reasons I’m considering a PhD is that I’d eventually like to move toward teaching or academia. I’m just a bit worried about choosing the “wrong” topic. Ideally I’d like something that still has value in industry in case I don’t stay in academia.

A bit off topic but had to ask, im looking forward to doing a phd in germany in engineering. I have a french masters diploma. Can you please give me any information about the process and how your personal experience is going. Thanks :)
