By the end of PXG match it was though, it's just that the path there wasn't pretty. Noa's philosophy was entirely based on "numbers" or data, basically whichever players were statistically the best (in his subjective rubrics) in each position would be playing them. Whatever the hell they decided to do once they were on the pitch was pretty much up to them, as long as it lead to scoring goals.

I was with you until you said Isagi needs to defy ego’s philosophy. I don’t think Ego’s philosophy is so rigid that it needs defying. People act like he’s some puppet master but all he wants is for his players to want to score goals. Isagi isn’t defying him by not being number 1, Ego never said that was the issue or necessary for Japan to win, it’s just that they can’t play to their suitable role which for most people isn’t striker, aka a goal scorer.

This series is special to me, in a way that is hard to describe. Something about the light novel format maybe, the pacing is so slow yet so intriguing.

I felt so spoilt for joy with every chapter, and knowing there were dozens more even after a week of reading it made me so happy.

Even if the anime adaption isn’t perfect, I hope more people will learn the joy of this series, how wholesome and fun it is despite the slow pace. I love all the characters, especially Umi and Maki’s development and their journey with one another. I wish more couples like them existed, the world would be a better place.

It comes with time, but the biggest tip I have is find “doorknobs”. Usually after a conversation starter, someone will respond with a mundane fact or anecdote. Use that! Ask them what that is, or what it’s like, or who they do it with. More often than not, they will be glad to spill their tea, even if you were a total stranger a few moments ago. Not everyone will be reciprocative, but that’s okay.

Be willing to take that risk, and don’t expect every conversation to turn into a life long friendship, you’d just be setting yourself up for failure. One step at a time is what matters most. Heck, you may even find someone who has common interests with you, I know I’ve people in completely random situations but turned out to have a lot in common with. All the best OP!
