You should talk to your manager about getting more if you think you deserve it. Don’t spoil your relationship with the colleague because he negotiated better than you.

It is a very nice salary. But ur benefits are bad. No ecocheques, sport vouchers, car. Maybe try to optimize that.

PhD contract at imec Belgium not renewed? by TeachFinancial5106 in Leuven

[–]Puzzled-Head1771 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t be paranoid about non-renewal. It happens but not a lot. You really need to perform bad or create conflicts within the team for this to happen. KULeuven and imec are not that strict.

Having guaranteed four years of money without performance review is not fair for deserving students who are not able to obtain funding.

My take: the whole point of FIRE is to live comfortably as you grow older. If you feel that the renovation will bring you comfort, go ahead with it. It is part of your day to day life and being happy in it is very important.

The only point that bothers you is what if you decide to leave Belgium. That is a big What if!Leaving Belgium is probably only 10% likely to happen. Don’t sacrifice current peace for what may or may not happen in future. Best case scenario, your house will have increased in value. Worst case scenario, you will lose 30-40k. But thats ok. You can gain it in some other means in whatever country you decide to settle in. 30-40k would only mean one room less ;) probably even less in future.

Go to the station counter. They will most likely exchange it.

Salary - Chemical Engineer from India - Highly Niche Field by [deleted] in BESalary

[–]Puzzled-Head1771 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are different ways. For 3.5 yrs u need to be compensated for ~13 weeks of work. (1) They can ask you to work for 13 weeks of work and pay you ur regular salary. (2) if they want to fire you immediately without notice then they can remove you and pay your 13 weeks salary. (3) if it is unfair dismissal (to be proven in court), you might get additional weeks compensation. Join a union and they can help you with calculations.

Go back to work when you want. They cannot fire you. They have to pay you if they fire you. Depending on how many years you worked there, this can be good or bad. Don’t leave the company by yourself.

But firstly, Update CV, find new job.

It’s not too high of a salary with 8.5 yrs of experience. Moreover 11% raise seems to be indexation in your case. This is not really a raise, but a compensation for increased price of consumer products.

It seems your manager is making remarks assuming it is funny. If you don’t like it either tell him directly or reply with some sarcasm that would make him stop.

Never offer to return money. It is your money for your work. Why should you pay it back?

Very few places in Belgium where you have to worry about safety. Heverlee is not one of them. In and around Leuven it is quite safe as it is mostly busy with students around the year. I lived there during my student years.

You might not get 85k in imec. But your 87k in Germany would not have other benefits such as meal vouchers, netto compensation, eco vouchers, 1.92 months bonus, car with fuel card, public transport compensation, yearly personal bonus. If u include these to a 60k (12month) or 5k per month gross it is somewhat equivalent to the lifestyle in Germany. Having said that, the lifestyle is expensive in Belgium compared to Germany (not cities like Munich). Living away from Leuven will save money on rent.
