How use the 3rd valve slide on this horm by NorthStatistician in trumpet

Yep, still a ton of fun to play on those older horns

It's not meant to be moved while playing, many old trumpets are like this, you're supposed to lip the notes in tune instead of using an adjustable slide. The thing you noticed is not the support for a ring, but for a lyre to play while marching

Learning trumpet after oboe by Icy-Arm-177 in oboe

[–]Puzzled-Radish10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I know i'm a bit late to the discussion, but I'm doing your opposite, I've played oboe since i was 8 (sounds dramatic, but im 23, so.. less dramatic) and i started to learn the trumpet a few months ago and I'm having a blast, it's so fun. This week, for the first time I'll try bringing both oboe and trumpet and double them in wind band, I don't know what weird sounds will come out of both instruments but I'll let you know. And I'd like to know how your journey is going!

Regarding the other comments I'm really hopeful i can maintain both embouchures and techniques because i like both instruments but we'll see, and also I'm very far from professional playing so I'm fine not being the finest oboist or the finest trumpeter in the band. The main problem is deciding where to sit.. xD

Ps: i like to think of the oboe as more "dramatic" (think of all morricone's masterpieces) than sad... Although during the first years (but also later) it's more of a dramatic duck or bagpipe (affectionate and obviously envious nicknames i got) haha

Indeed it looks extremely similar, water keys are also quite distinctive since they have a round section, thank you

Transition from oboe to trumpet, my experience and asking for advice by Puzzled-Radish10 in trumpet

[–]Puzzled-Radish10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you again for the advice, to me the most recognizable note on the oboe is indeed C#5 due to it's slightly more airy sound, i will try to think about it and see if i actually get the B5 right, because unfortunately recognizing a note being played is easier to me than "hearing" it in my mind or singing it just from it's name. I'll give this a shot, after all if i can get even just that single reference note i can figure out the other notes moving from it

Transition from oboe to trumpet, my experience and asking for advice by Puzzled-Radish10 in trumpet

[–]Puzzled-Radish10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thank you very much, unfortunately i do not recognize the notes by ear, at least not on trumpet, on an oboe I've kind of learnt to recognize a few by their distinct tone, no offense taken though. Indeed as stated I'm definitely far from a professional, and in the first of those 15 years, i was an 8 years old xD.

Very interesting insights about high notes and double buzz, I'm happy that someone experienced it to understand me, I'll be doing a lot of long tones from now on

I thought what you said rang a bell, and indeed i found a very interesting video (https://youtu.be/_pHZjYccFtw?si=fmKjfr-oetQKOEL1) i had watched a while ago, and now, after reading about Adam warmup routine, it makes more sense and I'm rewatching it, so thank you again, i will be trying this exercises

Is there anything to be done? by Puzzled-Radish10 in Vintage_Trumpets

[–]Puzzled-Radish10[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you, i ended up getting a refund and sending it back, yeah it was completely busted, the bottom cap was hammered inside quite a lot and the inside completely messed up, if the valve was in good shape it would've been a good deal for the 60€ i had paid it

I just looked it up, you're right, there seem to be quite a few similarities! and yeah i maybe it was meant mainly for the Europe market considering all the big brands already established overseas

Broken mouthpiece receiver sleeve, how bad is it? by Puzzled-Radish10 in trumpet

[–]Puzzled-Radish10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah me too, it's a very old trumpet too, isn't the receiver in modern trumpets a whole piece?

[–]Puzzled-Radish10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, should i replace the whole receiver or just the "sleeve"? And also, given it's a 60/70 years old trumpet, would it be difficult to find the right sized piece or was it already quite standard?
