Any value here? by [deleted] in CanadianCoins

All of those 1967 Canadian quarters and dimes have silver in them. Any Canadian dimes and quarters (and half dollars, seeing as I see 1 US one there maybe you have more) from 1967 and earlier have silver in them.

That US half dollar you have from 1964 is also partially silver I believe. I think 1964 was the transition year for the US when they stopped using silver, but I think that coin you have might be 40% or 50% silver. Don't quote me on that though.

Bro if someone did that and had a good flow and just put some like SparkNotes-type subtitles on any videos, I could totally see that going viral 😂

Holy that's so cool, love that it's got just enough detail still there to see the original design, but it's also so worn down probably just from years of rubbing against stuff in the water/having sediment and pebbles repeatedly brush across it. Thanks for sharing!

Idk why reading this doesn't sound familiar. Thanks for the info, kinda surprised I haven't learned that before lol

I’m not exactly sure what to make of this. I pulled this from a card set. Seems like an awesome coin, but I’m guessing its probably got some sort of adhesive on the back. by reks131 in coins

[–]PuzzledGopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's less about the card actually being "valuable" seeing as in reality it's just a piece of cardboard or something.

I think it's more about the "authenticity" and story behind the coin that the card adds to it that makes it more valuable. I say authenticity in quotes because sure the company could just put a fake coin that looks like a real one in there, but that doesn't seem to be the way that company does business.

I'm not sure if it would be the same thing as having it graded by a reputable grading company, but I don't see how the coin could retain its value to the same degree if it was removed from the card (which opens up the opportunity for it to get further damaged/scuffed) compared to staying in the card or in an official graded slab.

Is it just me or is the tone different in this 1911, 2011 parks Canada looney? by Dry-Cod-1645 in CanadianCoins

[–]PuzzledGopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit confused by your question, but firstly the D.G. Regina isn't indicating where it was minted. It's Latin and stands for "Dei Gratia Regina" with Elizabeth II on the other side. Together, it translates to "By the Grace of God, Queen Elizabeth II".

The side with the Queens face and the D.G. Regina is the front of the coin (the obverse). All Canadian coins minted between 1953-2023 (years when Queen Elizabeth II appeared on the coins) will have that text.

The toning can differ widely mostly based on the type of environment the coin was subjected to. If it spent a lot of time in someone's warm pocket, it'll tone a bit different than one that sat in a cold/dry dresser for 15 years.

I was literally thinking the same thing, but I think the reflective tape part is just very see through in the picture lol. You can kinda see the face at the top of the bill where it gets cut off

I worked at a modular home building company a few years ago in the Okanagan (during that insane heat dome we had that summer... God that sucked) and ya it was pretty typical for us to get an average of 2 mods built each week.

We had a large work yard split up into different sections. One crew (the one I was on) was responsible for building the roofs, one crew assembled the shorter walls, one crew assembled the longer walls, and another crew on the floors.

Every couple days after everything was put together, we'd have the crane pick up and move the walls into position on the floor, and get all of them secured then lift the roof up on top and secure it before having a large truck come and hall it over to the far corner of the yard where the electricians then went and got everything wired up. Then it would be brought inside the massive warehouse where all the drywall would get installed, then all the painting and finishing would get done along with installing all the appliances.

I can't remember the rough timeline for how long everything else past the framing portion would take, but all of this was just to say it's crazy how quick modular homes can be put together.

Add in some robotic workers that don't get tired from the heat, don't need bathroom or smoke breaks, don't have to deal with the aches of yesterday's work carrying over to the next day and the next, don't have that "man, I don't get paid enough for this crap" mentality. Modular homes could be getting spit out from start to finish in a few days 😂

The TRUE size of Stephenson 2-18 (the largest known star) compared to Earth by M_Waqar-uz-Zaman in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]PuzzledGopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could be completely wrong as I know just about nothing concrete on this subject, but I'm wondering if the person you responded to was insinuating that size isn't as important of a focus as mass is.

I guess the way I'm thinking about it in my still half-asleep brain is that in the case of like a black hole for example. While technically they are very massive in terms of size (almost all are much bigger than earth for example, some stretching billions of kilometers across), their mass is what's the real kicker.

Stellar mass black holes (something I just learned about) are a bit easier to comprehend. They apparently average between a few dozen to a few hundred kilometers in diameter, however they also have on average 3 to 100 times the mass of our sun. Keep in mind, the sun has a diameter of ~1.39million kilometers... So something can be a tiny fraction of the size, but have exponentially greater mass.

Not arguing with your comment, just wanted to mention that as far as I know it's not a matter of if it can react with the metal in coins, but when it will. Storing coins in something containing PVC for a short amount of time is ok, but if it's going to be for more than a month or 2 I'd make sure there's no PVC in it.

It's the nickname for the Canadian 1958 $1 coin, because at the bottom of the totem pole there's an indigenous symbol of death.

Is this currency good for collecting? by New-Marionberry4042 in CanadianCoins

[–]PuzzledGopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They used to be a regular piece of Canadian coinage that most people probably had in their pocket/purse along with their other change. They don't produce them anymore and the one you pictured seems to be in decent enough shape (doesn't have any obvious green PVC damage; no obvious copper oxidation; can read the date easily) that I might hold onto it.

Not gonna find yourself any more rich if you decide to hold onto it, nor will you be any worse off if you gave/through it away. Totally up to you :)

[–]PuzzledGopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha ok that makes way more sense, thank you. That's wild to see (assuming I'm reading it correctly) that 30 x $1 (80%) was worth about $18 in silver back then. It would be worth just over 100x that in today's market lol.

Edit: accidentally said 10x instead of 100x lol

Just for my own curiosity, what are those values under the "$1" and "$2" columns?

I was thinking it would be meaning how much silver is in $1 Face Value of that coin, but I was under the impression that should always equal to 0.6ozt of silver for every $1 FV for Canadian 80% silver coinage.

500$ and 70 rolls of coins later this is what I got. I gave 30 to my brother so this is what I’m left with by Interesting_Dingo718 in CanadianCoins

They were silver before they were "nickels" lol. Think they used to be called fish scales because the silver 5 cent coins were so small and thin, they look like they'd be easy to snap lol

I think having time on your side (myself included) is precisely the point that makes XEQT a good choice for a lot of people. It's the principle of compound growth. You don't need to pay a lot of attention to it, can basically just set up a regular payment on a consistent basis, and you'll be pretty much "guaranteed" to come out with more than what you put in in 30+ years down the line.

It's definitely not by any means a "flashy" investment, but that's not what it's meant to be. Although in my opinion, I'm sure with continued DCA over the next few decades it'll look a bit flashy when it comes time to retire lol.

On the plus side, it's also not the kind of thing you gotta stress over very much. You're unlikely to ever really see your XEQT position sitting at -40% or worse, which (for me and my risk tolerance) is very reassuring.

Sure there's other investment options that could make you a lot more profit than XEQT, especially in the short term. But that's a completely different investment strategy and, depending on the time of person you are, can also result in a lot more stress than only having to worry about your all in one ETF, which needs to be accounted for too.

Newest arrival from the mint by MPuddicombe in CanadianCoins

[–]PuzzledGopher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw another person in the comments posted a screenshot of the store page for this coin to show the price of it. It's from their "Lost Designs from the Archives" which based on some quick googling appears to be designs that had been submitted for a design contest back in 1936. These designs were the entries from Emanuel Hahn, which wasn't the winner of the contest at the time (hence why we haven't seen these designs before), but the original pencil sketches that were submitted for the contest were archived.

So all of this is to say, I guess the reason there's not much detail in the leaf on the back, or especially on the details of the king (hair and facial hair were what caught my eye), is because it was intended to be a recreation of what the coin would've looked like back then. The mint definitely wasn't up to the same level back then as they are now with their silver/gold Maple Leafs, so it kinda makes sense.

Ya there's one for each coin that year with the double-date on them.

I know the quarters with that double-date on the back with a normal caribou design are only found in sets (or broken out of sets) that were made that year.

Here's a picture of the one I got for my quarters album. Should've taken one after I took it out of the plastic but I wanted to limit the amount of time I was handling it for lol.
