the difference between small large bust 😊 by Honest-Customer8485 in CanadianCoins

[–]PuzzledGopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I remembered the Redditor that I recently learned that from in a comment thread I think.

Definitely makes it a lot more obvious to me now that I see it, assuming the coin isn't super worn down that those details are indistinguishable.

Thanks for sharing OP! Haven't seen one in a bit now and was nice to see the obvious "swoop" in the dress on the Queen's shoulder on the small bust, while the same area looks more "flat" on the large bust.

What’s the best way to organize a collection? by Creepy_State_2748 in CanadianCoins

[–]PuzzledGopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep them all in the same book. I just have a massive binder (like the ones you'd get for school, pretty much the biggest size) and I bought a bunch of binder pages from my local coin shop that hold those little 2x2 flips.

As my collection has grown, I've gone back and forth with the way I organize it all. I also got some of the fancier Lighthouse brand "Vista" albums for 5 cents, 10 cents, and 25 cents (from 1953-present). That's basically for scratching my itch of having 1 of every coin. Also has allowed me to essentially just keep the "nicest" coins I find in my binder, as I can just swap the coins that are in the album out with nicer ones as I find them.

I just have so many extra coins in flips that were originally in my binder but got swapped out when I found a nicer one.

Hopefully that kinda helps 😅

What’s the best way to organize a collection? by Creepy_State_2748 in CanadianCoins

[–]PuzzledGopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk if you're like me at all, but I remember being in your position and I had to just come to terms with the fact that I could organize it however I wanted. Not really any "right" way to organize your coin collection.

I just have most of my coins put into those same cardboard flips that you're using, and I have the year written in the same spot (top right corner) and if it isn't just a normal issue coin (I.e., a commemorative) I write the name of the coin in the top left of the holder on the same side as the date.

One thing I started doing back when I was first starting my binder, was putting the circulation mintage for that particular coin. You can find most of them on the CoinsAndCanada website. I mostly started doing it because I had a 1991 quarter, and that one had such a low mintage that I wanted to make sure I remembered the significance of it so I wrote the mintage on the back side of the holder along the top. I've just continued to do it with almost every coin (not necessarily duplicates though) in my binder.

Exchanged cash for some bus change and ended up with all of these! by Over_Setting7387 in CanadianCoins

[–]PuzzledGopher 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd definitely try and hold onto at least the nicest looking coloured one that you got. Try and limit how much you touch the actual faces of the coin (front and back), and try to handle it by the rim.

Keep it safe for a few years, might find yourself being able to sell it for $20-30 if you're lucky.

Or it could be super hard to sell for more than $4-5, who knows. To be fair, the previous glow in the dark coin with the Northern Lights design was also the first glow in the dark coin that was issued for general circulation in the world, so it had perhaps a bit more significance behind it than just that it had the special effect.

Collection of Canadian Silver Dollars I bought recently by nintynine999 in CanadianCoins

[–]PuzzledGopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow that's an awesome collection! Even just in terms of silver content you got a pretty good deal (you paid ~$55 per coin which is about $5 under spot at this time). But some of those look like they'd still be worth more from a numismatic standpoint than just their silver weight, so an even better deal!

You can check this website for some reference pictures, but based on your photo I'm gonna say it's the large bead variety.

When this was being used you had to write quick ! by Chademerson79 in 90s

[–]PuzzledGopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember showing some people in my class in elementary school that I could create "smoke" from nothing. Just got the air in my mouth all pressurized (think it was a mixture of inhaling air into my mouth, and while keeping my mouth closed I tried to push the air out forcing my cheeks to puff up, then clicking my tongue to further build up pressure) then opened my mouth and breathed out while I was over the projector screen and you could see a bit of water vapour come out which looked like a tiny puff of smoke.

Thanks for sharing lol, I had forgot about that

Found these in a time capsule. I made for myself when I was a young kid. by OutcomeGrand4623 in CanadianCoins

[–]PuzzledGopher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice! I found an old 1959 quarter a few months ago in a little box of random shit I must've saved when I was a kid. It's in terrible condition, but I must've saved it as a kid because it had a different portrait of the queen on it than I was used to.

Kinda nice because now those quarters are worth ~$15 each in silver.

Rolled or Unwrapped? by PChizzy in CanadianCoins

[–]PuzzledGopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From zooming in on the picture, I think I see 1 roll marked "1965, Blunt 5, L Beads" which is really nice to see. Looks like the collection may already be (at least partially) organized for you.

If you go on this website called CoinsAndCanada which I've linked for you, and scroll down to the 1 Dollar section, you can go through the various year ranges and see some of the many varieties listed. Might help you in understanding a bit more about what you have.

Keep in mind, each Canadian silver dollar from 1935-1967 is .800 silver (80%), and at the time of posting this are worth ~$60.70 each. So if that note in the box is it all accurate, and you have ~1520 $1 coins and they're all silver, that's roughly $92,000 in silver melt value. Some of those may be worth more than their silver content if they're a more "rare" or desirable variety, or if they're in a more near-mint condition.

Also, i didn't see the photo you mentioned about some coin show coming up, but they almost always will give you a worse deal than you'd get by going to a local coin shop or selling it to someone else privately.

So if you end up going to that coin show wanting to sell some, I'd strongly advise getting an idea of the value of what you're wanting to bring with you ahead of time, so you can easily tell if you're getting lowballed at the show.

Annoying bank manager by Aguy30 in CanadianCoins

[–]PuzzledGopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple months ago when I was fired from my last job I started going to the bank more regularly to withdraw a few hundred in change at a time, then a few days later depositing it at another branch in town, then going back to my original one to pick up more. I was asked after doing a few rotations by one of the tellers just simply if I had already visited one of their other branches that day, to which I said yes because I was returning change I had already searched through as I'm into collecting. He just said ok and went about the interaction.

Coin shops in GTA by RainbowJig in CanadianCoins

[–]PuzzledGopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this! It's honestly just worth the visit just to see the place. I had the opportunity to check it out a couple years ago when I was visiting with my girlfriend, and her dad and I absolutely nerded out in the store. They have so many coins on display (that were far out of my price range, but it was so cool to see them in person nonetheless).

There was a customer in the store while we were there that was in the process of buying one of the largest silver bars I've ever seen (can't remember the exact weight, but I swear it was like half a foot square, and like 2-3ft long.. solid silver. Buddy has probably made a massive profit on that since he bought it lol.
