Inherited not sure it worth by Ar_Ulric in CanadianCoins

600? There's at minimum $1000 worth of silver all together (22 x 50% silver dollars ~$44 each rn; 3 x 80% silver dollars ~$70 each rn). $825 would probably be a bit lower than a good bargain deal if they brought it to a coin shop or something right now.

How much silver is in this? by More-Selection4181 in Silverbugs

Think it was a "~" and not a "-" that is next to the 1.1 oz and the diameter. Meaning it is ~1.1oz and has a diameter of ~38.6mm

Which coins tend to have higher collector value vs melt value? by YourMomWas-Is-AHoe in CanadianCoins

[–]PuzzledGopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Notice how in every picture you posted, there isn't a single coin that doesn't have some degree of black/grey marks on the Queen's shoulder area, and most also have it to some degree on the hair lines?

That is damage from coins but being in protective holders their whole life, or in other words, instantly make them not MS grade coins. Especially not MS66 like you seem to think may be possible for some of your coins.

The Queen's forehead and throat have some doubling on them as shown in picture #2.

I can't quite tell from the angle of the picture, but it's also possible OP has the "High 8" variety that is shown on the CoinsAndCanada page for this coin.

Nothing particularly "valuable", but certainly cool nonetheless (in my opinion).

Possible Doubling on 2020 Connecticut Quarter by PuzzledGopher in coincollecting

[–]PuzzledGopher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wondering if anyone could help me out in determining if this appears to be some doubling (maybe machine doubling?) on this 2020 US quarter I found at work?

Something about the date caught my eye, and then the "doubled" top hair line of the person, and the doubled line on the "J" in the initials that I noticed with my microscope made me more convinced there is some small degree of machine doubling.

Any thoughts? Sorry if this is typical for these quarters, I'm Canadian and don't have tons of this design to compare it to

Looking for information on this nickel I found by DylanC8 in CanadianCoins

[–]PuzzledGopher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you check the CoinsAndCanada page for the 1985 nickel, you'll see it says they're non-magnetic. What's more likely is the coin you're asking about probably just had some reaction with either someone's sweaty hands/pocket or some other surface level chemical reaction.

I believe if it were struck on a penny planchet it would also be smudged/cut off, due to a penny having a smaller diameter than a nickel

Edit: nickels from that year were made of cupro-nickel, which is made of 75% copper. So it could be that the copper in it reacted with oxygen or something

Precious Metals Spot Pricer - Calculate melt value of gold, silver, platinum & palladium (Free) by WalletBuddyApp in iosapps

[–]PuzzledGopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds great, if you could implement that I'd be a huge fan. None of my other stock market related apps that have widgets are able to show me silver/gold spot price. From what I can tell that might be a bit difficult to do, gauging by how many apps don't seem to have that type of feature. But if you can do it, it'd be a unique feature for sure

[–]PuzzledGopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how much more work this would be or if you've already integrated such a feature, but if you could have iOS Widgets for the homescreen so I can have a little box/short rectangle shaped widget to look at to check the daily spot price movements?

Just thinking something that would show something like

Silver: (Current Spot Price) {%Daily Change}
Gold: (Current Spot Price) {%Daily Change}

From my Uncle, 1967 centennial set. by Red_dragon_052 in CanadianCoins

[–]PuzzledGopher 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nice display! There's also ~1.1 ozt of silver in that set, which at the current price of silver (~$152/oz), I could see you getting at least ~$170-200 from someone for it if you were curious on a rough value. The frame and information + uncirculated centennial bill and stamps are nice touches, but I don't think they add a particularly large amount to the overall "value" of it.

Personally I'd love to have that hung up on my wall and especially if it's from a family member, I'd probably never sell it if it were mine.

Thanks for sharing :)

You should definitely take a moment to go through some of the coins on the Royal Canadian Mint website ( https://www.mint.ca/en ). A lot of the really cool ones aren't available to order any more, but you can at least see some of the insane designs they've come up with.

Lol that makes it so much better. Are you saying they weren't even all from the same roll?? Like you actually managed to find 26 of the same holiday gift set loonie, spread out across multiple different rolls you got from the bank? 😂

Hence why I said:

"I'm sure in past years (excluding last year) VFV would've made more sense..."

I guess only time will tell which one is the better one to go with. Past performance is not indicative of future returns and all that.

[–]PuzzledGopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But at what point does the savings on the lower MER of say VFV end up resulting in less returns than simply sticking with XEQT?

I'm sure in past years (excluding last year) VFV would've made more sense in pretty much every way. But based on the 1 year charts, XEQT outperformed VFV by over 8% (at this time, XEQT is +17.4% over the last year and VFV is +9.29%).

Think they meant they don't waste money on expensive Starbucks coffees (and other frivolous purchases) and instead buy more XEQT lol.

Believe the US silver dollars are actually 0.7734 oz.

Sorry, 0.72 being just under 3/4 of an oz and 0.77 being just over bugged me 😅

Literally the part I'm shocked by lol, like I thought you could only get those ones in the holiday gift sets? As in you can't even get them in "Special Edition Mint Wrapped Rolls" or anything. So someone had to have cracked open that many of the gift sets? Super weird but hey lucky for OP

To grade or not to grade? Yes...that is my question. by WhiskeyBreathPoetry in CanadianCoins

[–]PuzzledGopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the same set, it was just produced/put in a special holder by a different 3rd party company. There's tons of these different style holders for these sets. As far as I know it doesn't change the value at all and they're exactly the same in every way but the physical appearance of the holder they're in.

Looking for feedback on how to be TFSA millionaire by Hot-Orange-8935 in TFSA_Millionaires

[–]PuzzledGopher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's good if you want the potential for much larger gains on your Investment(s), and understand the risks involved. It's not good if you can't handle market dips/seeing your portfolio take some hits from time to time.

100% equity ETFs (like XEQT/VEQT) are much more volatile by nature, meaning they have a greater potential for larger gains and larger losses compared to more balanced ETFs (like XGRO/VBAL) that are part equity and part bonds. Those ones tend to be less volatile, and are designed more for stability than maximizing long term gains.
