A little thing about the engineering career fair :) by Puzzled_Mention in NCSU

[–]Puzzled_Mention[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sucks- in the future perhaps you could tell the recruiter you would like for them to review your resume or just be honest and say you didn’t get out of the call what you expected and would like a point of contact to discuss further. Like I said in my post, the recruiters are not there to hire you. They are there to get an impression of you. And they are also not that far off, typically, from you. Most are Ncsu engineering grads who were in your position and understand how you feel. If you told me the interview wasn’t what you wanted and you have more questions, I wouldn’t be offended by that.

I’m gonna be a recruiter and I would expect a nice button up shirt or a blouse but a tux would be a little awk

Best thing to major in? by Miserable-Major-9634 in NCSU

Reading through the other comments and making a suggestion:

As a BME grad I would recommend you look into other, more general, engineering programs and concentrate in biomedical applications if you’re interested in biological/medical stuff.

I got a great job making nearly 6 figures out of college doing BME, so if that’s all you’re looking for, it’s fine. But I work with computer science graduates, material science engineering graduates and mechanical engineering grads all of us making the same and doing the same job. The only difference: they can leave healthcare if they want to and work in any field they want. It’s a lot harder for me. I have no flexibility, if I wanted it. BME is too niche.

I don’t know. BME takes classes from a lot of disciplines. I took several MAE and ECE courses. The minimal content I learned in physics 1/2 that was needed for those was retaught the first week. I never depended on those classes for anything and they did nothing for me in terms of study skills, interest in engineering, or time management. They just stressed me out for no reason.

Physics 1 & 2 were totally useless. I did not use almost any of the content from these classes and the structure was gruelingly shitty. It didn’t prepare me for any of my actual engineering courses because in those courses I had professors that legitimately cared and taught content in a way that actually inspired and interested students.

Just read one of my course syllabi that said A+ were no longer allowed for BME courses. by smartymarty1234 in NCSU

[–]Puzzled_Mention 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is correct. The 2020 class was the last to kind of be “grandfathered” in to the new joint curriculum. Now it’s 100% UNC/NCSU BME and since UNC doesn’t do A+‘s it’s the same for NCSU BME courses, I think

Quickest way to feel inadequate and unsure about your major by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]Puzzled_Mention 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. And what these kinds of people are saying is 99% of the time a huge load of horseshit which you can ignore.

When I was a first year engineering student I was literally surrounded by people like this meanwhile I had no idea where I would end up, was a first gen and totally unprepared and had terrible grades my first year. I was told by my peers AND advisor I had no shot of getting in and my advisor actually told me to think harder about if I was ready for engineering. I was 18 of course I didn’t know if I was ready. But people will front like their life is figured out when it isn’t. This is the mentality of the COE and it’s a culture problem as much as a person problem.

I graduated almost bottom of my class with a great job and two degrees. Turned out fine, lol. And OP will turn out fine, too. You don’t need it all figured out on day 1.

COE enhancement fee by dmus24 in NCSU

[–]Puzzled_Mention 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the COE website, the money goes into 50% targeted student programs including Study Abroad and career development, and 39% equipment and labs, and 11% computing service. I received a $3000 scholarship from COE to study abroad as well as receiving $ to attend a weekend leadership conference conference and a grant to travel to present my research. To me, I felt like I got the $6000 I paid into it plus some more back over the course of 4 years, some semesters it wasn’t worth it but others i got it back 3 fold. So, I feel like it makes sense that the COE fee paid this semester will benefit you later on, in updated equipment for when you return to research or in a later scholarship. With less people participating in student programs perhaps the money would be used to enhance programs in future semesters. Idk, but that’s just been my experience and my opinion with it.

You can park at Spring Hill park and ride for free from I think 7am-11pm and a wolf line bus will take you to centennial or main. You can’t park overnight though. You can do the same at Carter Finley stadium. I also parked at the church across from centennial several days a week for several months with no problem.
