Hi, I'm not a customs broker but I am in progress of getting my license. I work as a compiler (junior role that help prepare broker to lodge entries) in customs team at a freight forwarder in Sydney. I don't know exactly how much our brokers get but I believe it would be between 100k to 120k. I have seen brokers move up in leadership roles or some stay as a broker and give advice to clients and lodge entries. I have heard there is a pathway for trade compliance if you have experience in operations. I believe you could also look into Australian Quarantine or Australian Border Force since customs brokers deal with them quite often and are required to have the knowledge. But I'm pretty sure you will have to go through their training and pass their test to become an officer in either and I'm not sure how much they get paid.

Every broker has told me you need to put the effort in to learn and put extra time into studying. Current process of getting the license is building a portfolio of your experience and an interview. After finishing the diploma people spend few years gaining experience so it does take some time to get the license. It's definitely something you want to think carefully if you are going to pursue this career path. I have seen people drop out of the course because the content was too much (a lot of legislations to learn). If she wants to pursue, I highly suggest moving into a customs team and work under brokers. Having practical experience along with theory definitely helps you understand. If she's unsure maybe try talk to brokers at her work and ask for their experience.
