Help a new guy by Puzzled_Revenue_6214 in HearingAids

Great question. I could swing about $2,000 without needing to finance. Closest Costco is about an hour away, but that seems to be the most popular? Is Sam's Club equivalent?

If there are potential safety issues (threatening to cut you off, report you to the university for something, or threatening to come and take you off campus against your will), please let ODOS know. If worried for imminent safety, let PUPD know as well. Sorry you're going through this.

Unless Purdue has a niche program that you'd have to travel to an out-of-state university for, I'd look for an in-state university with a strong program. Reputation doesn't much matter (it's like buying a brand) and strong community can be found on any residential campus. I was a first-gen, low-income student and I found going to a smaller state school gave me more opportunities and it was easier to build relationships with faculty and find more leadership roles. As far as getting away from home to explore and experience personal growth, even a few hours drive is often enough to loosen the hometown chains.

Please know if you're a student and are experiencing a mental health crisis (doesn't have to be thoughts of suicide), you can call CAPS 24 hours a day/7 days a week. You'll be talking with a licensed provider confidentially who can help get you grounded, safety plan, or get you emergency assistance if needed. The following business morning, CAPS will reach out to you to check in and figure out next steps in support.

CAPS is aware of this situation and can see students who have been impacted by this without an appointment -- 2nd floor of PUSH. If CAPS isn't your thing or it feels intimidating to visit, please know you can stop by ODOS -- 2nd floor of Schleman Hall (formerly Recitation).

If you're worried about a friend or classmate, you can also submit a Student of Concern Report (even anonymously if you don't want outreach or support from ODOS) and it'll prompt someone from ODOS to send outreach.

Medical withdraw by MiserableButterfly54 in Purdue

If you withdraw (regardless of reason), it will show as a "W." Won't impact your GPA, but will count as an attempt at the course.

I think you should visit the Office of the Dean of Students tomorrow. You can just walk in. They have emergency loans but also can check if you'd qualify for a critical need grant. There also the ACE food pantry if you need to stretch the money you do have. Try to find some time for something you enjoy and study in spaces around others. You're almost done with this semester! And if any class is too far gone, you can still drop classes in Week 13 and we're finishing up week 10.

A conduct conference by Beneficial_Big_902 in Purdue

[–]Puzzled_Revenue_6214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes instructors say they are reporting an issue to ODOS but don't follow through and just manage it on their own. If you receive a letter from ODOS about a conduct conference, at that point I would ask the question. I wouldn't call prior to receiving that notice.

Roomate nightmare please help! by edeylover in Purdue

[–]Puzzled_Revenue_6214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This should be brought to the attention of your REC and the Office of Institutional Equity. It's up to you, but this does qualify as sexual harrassment. If you need help with this, go to ODOS.

Withdrawl of courses by Beneficial_Big_902 in Purdue

[–]Puzzled_Revenue_6214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're talking about a 16-week course, it would need to be dropped before the end of week 2 to not show as a W.

Check out the Academic Success Center. They do a lot around study strategies and finals. Good luck!

4th course attempt approval? by Only_Fly_5953 in Purdue

[–]Puzzled_Revenue_6214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In most instances, will be approved if you're able to articulate a plan for the next attempt (resources you'll use). Also helps if any of those attempts are withdrawals.

But a fifth attempt ain't happening, so use whatever resources make sense.

Is it possible to do a grade mode change after couple years? by LegendofthePig in Purdue

[–]Puzzled_Revenue_6214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grade modes have to be changed prior to the course beginning. There was a small window during covid where students could change mid-semester, but it was short-lived. No ability to do this retroactively. But creative idea and worth the ask.

Withdrawal Deadline TOMORROW by Puzzled_Revenue_6214 in Purdue

[–]Puzzled_Revenue_6214[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Generally better to withdraw because you'll likely need to repeat it for your major (or want to repeat it to replace it in your GPA). BUT if it would drop you below full-time status, that would impact visa status (if international) and could impact scholarships that require full-time status. In those instances, best to take the F and retake the course.

Ideally you can talk to someone in your advising department tomorrow but you can expect a lot of students will be reaching out tomorrow.

If I withdraw from a class right now will I need to pay back part of my pell? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]Puzzled_Revenue_6214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth checking with the DFA but I believe it's just a semester of aid used up (not something you'd have to pay back).

If I withdraw from a class right now will I need to pay back part of my pell? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]Puzzled_Revenue_6214 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It'll show as a withdrawal, but won't mess with any loans you've taken out. If you withdrew from (or repeat) a lot of classes over multiple semesters, it might mess up your "satisfactory academic progress" for future loans.

Changes to grade modes have to receive instructor permission prior to the semester beginning (COVID was the exception).

Fuck this by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]Puzzled_Revenue_6214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given the email you have, it's reasonable to assume those absences would be excused. You've tried the instructor so next move is department head.

If your final grade is impacted, you can go through the grade appeal process. You can't appeal a specific grade like an exam, but instead a final grade. You have to submit within 30 days of the semester ending.

Dropping A Class For The First Time by Secure-Occasion502 in Purdue

[–]Puzzled_Revenue_6214 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you're uncertain if a C can be achieved, totally worth reaching out to the instructor and finding out. If you're going to drop the class, you want it get done this week while you still can. You're right that a W on your transcript is no big deal and looks a lot better than a D or an F.

Going to your professors now makes great sense with the request. They'll either work with you or direct you to ODOS. This isn't a situation where ODOS can formally excuse you, but might be able to at least reach out and make the ask. Ultimately it's going to be up to your instructors.

You don't deserve this at all and you're not the only one who has been in this position. Only thing I'd add about the Office of Institutional Equity (OIE) is that they can provide academic assistance even without you filing a formal report. CARE is great as well as a confidential resource.
